Part 1 - Role Play: With the group, you are to role play a time when you have promoted (or attempted to promote) Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety within the scope of community services.
If you have not promoted Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety while working in community services, you can either; select a time when you have promoted cultural safety of any type within a workplace, or, devise and role play a scenario in which you could promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety within the scope of community services.
Part 2 - Reflection: Once you have completed you role play, the whole group will come together to reflect on the different role play scenarios. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the different interactions and evaluate ways to improve communication. Together discuss strategies to improve making and maintain cross cultural relationships. Once you have performed the reflection you should write a short report outlining your discussions and conclusions.
The assessment must involve persons approved of by relevant local community elders.
Your 2 observations will be observed as follows:
• 1 observation by your host employer / workplace supervisor that will be verified by your assessor from your College
• 1 observation by an Assessor from your College (These are to be recorded in your Work Placement Record Book that will be given to you by your assessor)
QUESTIONS
1. Discuss each of the following. Each discussion should be a minimum of 100 words. If you do not have a workplace to discuss, please use the workplace of your choice.
1. What are the cultural safety issues that may impact service delivery in your workplace? What are their potential impacts on service delivery? What are the critical issues you need to be aware of which will influence relationships and communication with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in the workplace? How is cultural safety integrated into your workplace?
2. What is your own cultural bias? Does this affect your work? How? In what way do you model cultural safety in your own work? Are there communication techniques and work practices you employ to show respect for the cultural differences of others?
3. What strategies do you employ to develop effective partnerships with other staff, clients and communities, including the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities? Do any of these strategies encourage self-determination and community control in your community service? How? Are there any resources you utilise to develop and promote these partnerships?
4. Briefly and respectfully discuss Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history, the impact of European settlement, loss of land and culture and the importance of law and kinship.
