Jenny, a three year old, has been attending childcare for the last 12 months. She has a one year old brother, John, who has just recently started attending childcare with her. Jenny has begun wetting her pants throughout the day and will not comply with requests from her educator to pack away toys and wash her hands before meal times. Jenny has always enjoyed a story at group time, but now is easily distracted, grabs comfort toys from the younger children and often pinches and hits children sitting next to her during group time. 

Question 1
a.    What information would you gather and observe on Jenny to help you understand why this may be occurring, please include at least 3 different types of information?
I would discuss with parents on the toileting routine of the brother to see if Jenny role models that. I would also observe what Jenny is like when interacting with other children, specifically when it comes to sharing. I would also observe to see how other children interact with Jenny to see if there is anything that the other children do that can potentially ‘trigger’ her.

b.    Please give 3 ways you will record this information and a justification for your choice of each 
-    ABC observation can be nused to see what leads up the any of the above issues. This will also provide a before, during and after scenario.
-    Event samples would be useful to indicate when during the day that Jenny tends to act this way.
-    Interviews with parents to gather further information on what Jenn is like when at home.

Question 2 
Identify a minimum of 4 possible triggers and factors that may be contributing to and/or causing Jenny’s behaviour
-    Not providing clear and easy to understand instructions
-    Not telling an educator when she needs to go to the bathroom
-    Other children could be picking on her
-    The idea of having his younger brother now can contribute to the way in which Jenny responds to others
