Jim, aged 68, has spent the last month in the Hospital Rehabilitation Unit.  One morning when he tried to get out of bed, his legs gave way and he found himself on the floor unable to move. Marg his wife called an ambulance and after numerous tests at the hospital, it was determined that he had a cerebral thrombosis (a stroke) and has paralysis in the left side of his body. Two months later, Jim is making steady progress and will soon be able to walk with the aid of a walking stick.  His left hand has some movement and that is improving.  His speech is still rather slurred, and he tires very easily.  He is frustrated that he will no longer be able to do the woodwork that he has always loved and knows that he will have trouble getting back into the garden.  He has always been very active and after he retired, he used to spend hours every day doing his woodwork or digging, weeding and planting in his rather large garden.  Now, he says, he “can’t even drive my own car”.Jim still enjoys listening to music and watches a lot of sport on Foxtel.  He has a lot of friends but is embarrassed about his disability as well as having to ask others for assistance all the time. Marg and the family are eager to help him adjust to his disability and want him to be happy and comfortable at home. You are the recreation coordinator in the Rehab Unit and have been asked to arrange a program of activities that he will be able to enjoy at home.  You know Jim quite well now and have been involved in his case conferences with the other members of the rehabilitation team.
