Task 1:

Please complete five reflections as instructed by your classroom teacher. These are completed in your SWSI moodle.

The reflection tasks will open and close on the days noted in your Moodle.

About reflective writing

Reflective writing is your response to experiences, opinions, events, or new information, your response to thoughts and feelings, a way of thinking to explore your learning, an opportunity to gain self-knowledge, a way to achieve clarity and better understanding of what you are learning, a chance to develop and reinforce writing skills and a way of making meaning out of what you are learning

You might ask the following questions when reflecting on your learning.

Description – what is the concept, idea or theory you are reflecting on?

Analysis – are there aspects you found particularly challenging? Does it tie in with anything you have learned in the past? Has it changed the way you think, or affirmed something you already knew?

Outcome or actions – what else might you need to find out? Do you have any questions? How might you incorporate or apply ideas in the future, perhaps in your professional life?

Reflection involves thinking about why we do things and whether they have gone as we thought they would and how might we do them differently next time. It also gives us time to think about our own attitudes, values and beliefs and how these impact on our practice.

Task 2:

You are required to complete a personal development plan using the skills, knowledge and information gained while undertaking your course and from your reflective journal.

The aim of a personal development plan is to improve your professional practice. Your personal development plan needs to reflect a commitment to best practice.

If you are already employed in industry you can complete this task in the workplace, with the permission of your employer.

Otherwise you may base it on learning in the classroom, through lesson content, discussion, role plays, people’s past experiences or the simulated classroom.

This is also a valuable tool to assist you to plan ahead for future employment in the community services area.

As part of your self- development plan, identify a personal goal that you wish to develop. Using the SMART goals devise, document and implement a self-development plan of how you will attain that goal.

The plan needs to include a minimum of two:

• Goals in your personal development plan
• Strategies
• Timeframes
• Methods for measuring progress

When developing your Personal Development Plan (PDP) consider incorporating some/all of the following options in your strategies for meeting your goals:

a) Follow up action from the Reflective Journal

b) Formal and informal learning opportunities

c) Sourcing specialist advice or specialist training, noting why and when you did

d) Industry networking

e) Professional associations

f) Training requirements and options

g) Accessing and reviewing information on current and emerging industry developments

h) Participation in supervision and review processes

i) Self-care and potential support networks

j) Consider three competencies you believe you should develop and where they fit in your plan
