Question 1
a. What is meant by the term nuclear radioactivity?
b. What fraction of a radioisotope has decayed after two half-lives? (3 marks) c. The natural radioisotope, radium-226 ( 226Rn), undergoes a radioactive decay where it emits an alpha particle to become radon-222 ( 222Rn) which has a half-life of 3.82 days. Will a sample of 222Rn be at less than one fifth (1/5) of its original strength after a period of 5 days? Explain.
Question 2
a. If the pKa value of pyruvic acid (HA) is 2.50, what is the ratio of pyruvic acid (HA) to its conjugate base sodium pyruvate (A-), in a pyruvic acid solution with a pH of 3.5?
b. The most important buffer for maintaining blood acid-base balance is the carbonic-acidbicarbonate buffer system. The simultaneous equilibrium reaction of this biochemical process occurs as shown below:
i) Explain why both acid (H2CO3) and conjugate base (HCO3 - ) are necessary in buffer system.
ii) Given that the normal blood pH is 7.35, what is the expected pKa of H2CO3 ([H2CO3] = 0.50 M and [HCO3 - ] = 0.100 M)?
