Highlights
Assignment – Child Observation Assignment
Instructions to students:
The aim of this assignment is to provide you with the opportunity to observe the behaviour of a child, who may or may not be developing typically, so that both observation skills and an understanding of the pros and cons of developmental checklists/milestones can be developed.
Watch the following YouTube clip (FROM 6.40 MINS) which is an observation of a 2.5-year-old child called SarahsHow to observe and collect data: Use the NSW developmental checklist that is available on the FLO site to help guide your observation. It is suggested that you begin by focusing on items in the age range into which the child fits. For Sarah, who is 2.5yrs, for example, start in the two to three year age range. Be mindful that items in the age range below or above might also be scored.
Remember that you might not observe all the behaviours listed in the checklist. If you do not observe a behaviour, just leave the box beside the item blank. Remember to include a scanned copy of your observation checklist when you submit your assignment.
Structure of your paper (2000 words, + or – 10%)
Introduction (approx. 300 words):
Brief purpose of the assignment.
Brief background information of the child (such as age, gender) and description of the context the child was in when the observation took place.
Describe the method used in gathering information (e.g., what approach have you taken and what checklist is being used).
In general, what is the purpose of a developmental assessment (not specifically for this child but in general)? Ensure you reference academic literature, government documents and/or other reliable academic sources using APA format in this section of the introduction.
Findings (approx. 800 words):
Describe what is considered ‘typical’ in terms of development for toddlers of Sarah’s age (2.5yrs) (based on developmental textbooks or other reliable academic sources) in relation to physical/motor, emotional/social and cognitive/language milestones. Ensure you reference academic literature, government documents and/or other reliable academic sources using APA format in this section of the introduction.
Then, in relation to Sarah, discuss what you saw in terms of physical/motor, emotional/social and cognitive/language development, with specific examples of activities observed (e.g., under the sub-heading of physical/motor development you might describe evidence of gross motor, or fine motor skills).
Remember this section is about observation not diagnosis.
Reflection and Discussion (approx. 800 words): this part can be written in the first-person
Reflect on how you found the process of observing a child via video (e.g., what you found challenging and why). What do you believe are the benefits and limitations of checklists as a means of understanding developmental milestones and the method of video observation to perform these, particularly in the case of identifying children who may be developing differently? Hint: if you can, find academic literature which has discussed this issue to back up your ideas.
Conclusion (approx. 100 words):
Summarise the main points of your assignment (do not introduce new information, no need to include references).
Evidence of reading and research/references
Always acknowledge references (academic sources including topic textbook) that you have used to support your findings.
Your report is an academic piece and needs to be written and presented in an academic writing style with clear expression, logical progression of ideas, accurate spelling and grammar, and person-first language.
Please use APA 7th Edition referencing.
