Firstly this essay will define phonics and whole language. Phonics is the set of relationships between the sounds in our language and letters that can represent those sounds (TEXT). The term ‘ whole language” was popularised by Goodman(1986).’A whole language approach immerses young children in reading and writing activities that are deemed authentic, that is involving real purpose or genuine attraction ‘( Cooper, 2005, p.235)
One of the best Approach to teaching children spoken sounds and sighting words is through exposing them to an early age to phonics and whole language , the whole language approaches to teaching children how to read can helps to create a foundation for Children literacy development., some researchers are of the opinion that teachers could not teach letter names at all (TEXT). However ,other researchers are of the opinion that teaching children names and
sounds is very important (TEXT)
Advantages of phonics and whole Linking sound and know letters that will later help in children later knowledge in reading and writing. It’s further helps children to learn the sound and names identified with each letter. It explains to children children to a lexicon of words that all spring out other words and sentences. teach children words and letter patterns.min the whole.helps children to identify which is sounds and words. One of the disadvantages of whole language is that it doesn’t help the teacher to applying knowledge to children because it helps the children to only know about the letter and their names. In teaching letter, while for phonics some words have two or more sounds. Some time . Sometimes it is too complex for children to understand the use of phonics. Often times some educational leaders place too much emphasis on phonics forgetting that children have to
recognise the words first before learning the sounds .Help children with sentences and words spellings. Another major disadvantage of the phonetics is that phonics is not important for children with special needs example ( deaf children) because words are first sighted or recognised and pronounced before learning the sound. Phonics helps the children to learn rhyming words and how to identify words that rhymes together . Phonics and whole language requires a skilled teacher to guide children on letter to sound correlation and relationship The standardized alphabetic spelling system of English language can help teachers better support young Children’s literacy development ( McCutchen et al (2009) ( TEXT)
Blending the words helps children to learn the letter by letter basis skills and also the letter sounds. , Example what comes After A is B,This can also help children to solve the puzzle for unknown words. Helps to create a balance to literacy learning skills and outcomes
