Case Study - George Yu
George Yu is a 66-year-old second generation Chinese Australian man. His parents came to Australia in the 1920s and settled in the inner-city suburb of Newtown. George and his wife moved to Parramatta to start a family and he worked in the economics department of the University of Sydney for most of his adult 
working life. He retired at age 65 and has struggled to make use of his time since then, he has tried gardening, but his hip pain makes this difficult. He has trouble catching up with friends who are too busy still working or have busy retirements which make scheduling conflicts.  
 
George’s wife Ruby is 59 years old. She is Australian born from European heritage. She and George both cook. George enjoys having dinner ready for her when she gets home from work every day. George prefers when they can make dinner together each evening when possible. He enjoys having family and friends over 
for dinner.  
 
Mrs Yu works in the men’s fashion department in a large department store in the city. She has worked there since their children left high school. She works full time, but has promised she will work 2 days/week after the busy Christmas season at the end of this year. They are both active in their local Christian church 
and attend services each week. Both George and Ruby have their own car. 
 
They have two adult children: Anna, 37, is married with two young boys (aged 9 and 6), they live in Richmond. David is 32. He lives in Hong Kong with his fiancée Nikki, an Australian woman. They work together in a large international accounting firm and plan to get married and move back to Australia in 2024.  
 
George has overall good health. He has osteoarthritis in both hips and knees, but he reports he does not usually experience pain except with extended periods of kneeling or standing. He is 160cm tall and weighs 64kg. He wears glasses. He takes metoprolol and rosuvastatin daily and his BP and cholesterol have been 
well managed, noted on yearly GP check-ups. He owns and can use carpentry tools and enjoys working on home and garden improvements, but he is even happier when his wife can join in with this. He gets lonely when she is at work. They had hoped to travel more after his retirement, but the Covid-19 pandemic meant this was not possible. 
 He sees his daughter and grandsons as much as possible. Both his parents and his wife’s parents are no longer living.
