Highlights
TASK
For this assessment, you are asked to imagine that you are a consultant who has been engaged by the (XXX – you can select your own name here) organisation that has a historical archive of digitised sounds to find an existing metadata schema that will provide the best access to their large collection of digitised sounds. You should exclude Dublin Core from the list of schemas you can choose from.
Your task is to write a proposal (in the form of a report) that describes and justifies your favoured schema. Your report should cover the following:
What are the special needs of your users? What are the special aspects of your collection that require a specific schema?
Find two special schemas that could be used for your material. Briefly discuss the strengths and possible weaknesses of both schemas (A good starting point for finding specialised schemas is the list of Information Organisation Element Sets).
Choose one of these schemas and explain why it would provide the best access for your collection. Present an example record based on the schema in an appendix.
Which of the elements in your chosen schema will not be useful for your collection? Are there additional elements (from other schemas) you would like to include in your schema? Explain with details.
Does your chosen schema use any controlled vocabularies or standards? If so, are they appropriate for your collection of digitised sounds and why? If not, what would you suggest as alternatives and why?
Discuss metadata quality considerations – if there are mechanisms to ensure the quality of metadata (i.e. to make sure the metadata created are correct, complete, consistent and without duplication).
Discuss the interoperability of this schema with any external standards that might be relevant, either now or in the future.
Indicate which elements should be searchable by users and which elements only need to be displayed (for information) in a record. (This would be best presented in a table.)
Your report should be divided into sections, with headings that clearly indicate the topic being discussed. The report should include (you do not need abstract or summary for this report):
Introduction (approx. 200 words) - outlining task and collection being discussed.
Body of the report (approx. 1600 words) divided into sections (each with its own heading) that answer the questions being asked.
Conclusion (approx. 200 words).
References to relevant literature (not included in 2000 word limit). Your references should follow APA style of referencing, with proper in-text citations.
Appendix.
The executive summary is not required for this report. Tables and In-text citations are included in the word count but table of contents, list of references, and appendices are not included in the word count.
If you want to do well in this assessment, you should be creative, create a fictional organisation (and its collection) of your favourite topic and, spend some time thinking about its users and their needs, describe them well and link all your subsequent decisions regarding the schema and elements you choose etc. to the collection, its users and their needs.
