Highlights
TASK:
Chris Mitrevski is a Registered Nurse working in Intensive Care in a busy city hospital. He recently turned up for a night shift smelling of alcohol and denied being intoxicated when asked by co-workers. He assured colleagues that it was only a few drinks with friends over dinner, which couldn& be avoided due to being called in at the last minute for the night shift
His Nurse Unit Manager has referred him to Drug and Alcohol Services for assessment and intervention.
He goes out frequently and meet friends almost every night for dinner and consume at least 4-5 glasses of wine over dinner, plus pre-drinks before going out (approximately 2-3 glasses wine) to limit the cost of expensive restaurant wine. He no longer eats at home because his partner died in a motor vehicle accident six months ago and he can’t bear to be alone. He only go home to change clothing and sleep between shifts.
He finds it difficult to get to sleep and the alcohol helps. If he hasn’t fallen asleep within 20 minutes, he also take two 5 mg Valium tablets. If this doesn’t work, he takes two 10mg Temazepam after that, which always works eventually. He also often needs to take a couple of 5mg Valium prior to commencing his shift, just to steady his hands and to help you get through the shift.
Prior to his partner dying, you only very occasionally drank alcohol. He doesn’t use any other substances or smoke cigarettes. He has never had any counselling or professional help to help him cope with the death of his partner. He doesn’t really think that he has a problem with alcohol, but, as a registered nurse, he has the knowledge of the fact that he is starting to rely on alcohol and pills to help him to cope and to be able to work. He knows that this is not affecting his performance in any way and it is the service that has the problem. He just needs to get a report that tells them so.
He has turned up at Drug & Alcohol services so that he can get the assessment and tell his Nurse Unit Manager that he is fine and there's nothing to worry about.
