1. Module Summary  
This module is a core requirement for students taking this course. The Capstone Project is in  essence student directed, but an academic supervisor will be associated with each Project, and  each student will be directly responsible to the supervisor for all matters relating to study. This  module offers the opportunity for students to demonstrate skills and understanding gained  through application to a project of their choice. There is a requirement to show evidence of  managing and developing the process of running a project, creating a prototype and reflecting  critically upon the process and outcomes.  
All students are encouraged to conduct projects within their chosen speciality. The module leader  will present summaries to students of supervisor expertise. The module leader will put forward a  number of potential real projects. Written forms of these summaries will also be distributed  through Weblearn. Students will then discuss their own project ideas with several potential  supervisors and come to an agreement on one of them. Based on these discussions and further  guidance by the chosen supervisor, the student will write a project proposal, which constitutes  the first assignment of the module. Students are encouraged to develop a prototype solution for  a real client.  
The student will document the project in a report that is submitted at the end of the project. The  report is complemented by a viva that involves at least two members of staff. Throughout the  module, the project is supported by weekly lectures given by a variety of members of staff. These  are based on the particular expertise of the presenting lecturer. All lecture material is available  
via Weblearn. The module is designed as preparation for future work place experience and clients  of previous projects have chosen to buy the software the student had developed or to employ  the student.

AIMS  
• To demonstrate initiative and creativity in the application of student’s skills and  knowledge to an individual project of appropriate complexity over an extended period of  time.  
• To develop project management, demonstration and oral presentation skills.  • To develop analytical, design, networking and/or programming skills and to apply these  to an identified problem.  
• To consolidate the use of appropriate application packages for analysis and presentation  of students primary data or selected secondary source data.  
• To present methods, techniques and issues encountered when undertaking research.  • To enable students to examine methodological issues in the process of their investigations  and the analysis of their findings.  
LEARNING OUTCOMES (INDICATIVE)  
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:  
• Plan, manage and control a substantial project including its critical appraisal.  • Investigate, analyse and define the problem either for a client or to support their own  implementation, as appropriate.  
• Apply relevant techniques in systematically designing a solution to the problem  independently identify, research and synthesise literature relevant to the problem.  • Development of a prototype leading to a solution and its appropriate testing.  • Report effectively on what has been achieved and to what extent the objective(s) have  been reached.  
• Demonstrate competence in the production of supporting documentation for the work.  
CURRICULUM CONTENT (INDICATIVE)  
Students develop their own programme of work as appropriate to their particular project, with  advice from their mentor and in particular by their project coordinator. 
TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGY (INDICATIVE)  
The project is studied independently. The Project Module coordinator will brief students about  the process that will be followed through the choice of project, development, implementation  and presentation of the final product to match course requirements. He will also cover topics on  project progression, the roles of assessor and supervisor, project report requirements and project  assessment.  
Students are further supported by specialist lectures given by Mentor and critical friend with  particular expertise. It is the course team’s intention to adopt flexible and adaptable teaching and  learning strategies which can accommodate the range of students and satisfy the vocational  requirements and personal aspirations of the students. Projects often have a client from industry,  which helps students understand employer needs. 
The project Mentor provides guidance and direction within the bounds of the project. Students  are expected to meet their Mentor at the beginning of the project and to make arrangements for  a pattern of future meetings to keep the Mentor informed of progress.
