Highlights
1. Introduction and Background
The introductory paragraph tells the reader what the proposal is about and what to expect in the proposal. One way of doing it is to state the purpose of the study and the reasons for wanting to do the research, or why you are interested in this topic, for instance, was it something that you observed, or do you have evidence from documents or the literature that there is a problem?
Keep in mind that an introduction does not go into specifics; it only prepares the road for the rest of the proposal. The next section (background of the problem) provides more detail about the nature and context of the problem.
In this section, the context (circumstances, surroundings, and environment) of the study is described in more detail and is gradually narrowed down into a well-developed research problem. Where possible give answers to the following questions (not necessarily in the same sequence as listed below):
• Where does the problem occur? Give a brief overview of the organisation or environment where the problem occurs, e.g. a government department, a rural community, a merger between corporate bodies, etc.
• How big is the problem? Is it only a minor problem, or not?
• How often or regularly does the problem occur?
• Is the problem getting worse, better or staying the same?
• Who or what is influenced by the problem?
• When does the problem occur?
• How serious is the problem?
This section may be as short as a single page, but it should be very clearly written, and it should let the reader assess whether the proposed research is relevant.
The research topic should be clearly recognisable in the introduction.
2. Abbreviated Literature Review
A literature review is NOT merely a summary of one journal article or book after another, or just a descriptive list of the material available on the topic.
A literature review, for the purpose of a research proposal on a postgraduate level, is a short and precise overview of recent and authoritative research that is related to your research topic. Thus, you have to summarise and reference the most important contributions of other researchers on the topic and indicate what is known about the topic.
Keep in mind that the literature review for a research proposal is only a preliminary review. It contains less information than a final review, is often less specific, and reviews fewer sources.
Organise your literature review into:
a) an introduction
b) a body
c) a conclusion.
The introduction to the literature review should introduce the literature review. You can briefly write what the aims of the literature review are, and how you will organise the content, i.e., chronological or thematic or in another way. You can also indicate the main types of resources that you have used, and maybe what difficulties you had to find and locate some or certain sources or types of sources.
The body of the literature will depend on how you organise your review. A common approach is to present the review in a quasi-historical manner: from the earliest to the most recent research on the topic. If possible, review only research of the past 10 years. Another approach is to divide your topic into sub-topics. Present the parts in separate sections, and then tie them together in the conclusion. Whatever structure you follow, make sure that you define and describe the main variables of the study, based upon the variables contained in the title, main problem and sub-problems.
