Task
Objective:
Read the Brief Report of The Federal Government of Canada’s Residential School System for Inuit by David King. Analyze the data included in the report and convert them into a database for storage.
Prepare a summary report and a presentation to the public audience.
Part 1: Covert the following tables into Excel.
Modify the data as indicated: Turquetil Hall open year: 1951 and 80 living capacity; drop Grolter and Straeger Hall; Fort Franklin, Cambridge and Pond Inlet open year 1960; drop all children in the living capacity; 2 hostels Inuvik, living capacity 250*2 = 500; and all small hostel as 1.
For Table 2: let us split the Federal – NWT and Quebec one as 800/58, 1000/159, and 1200/280 for simplification. And the total attendance of these rows is updated as 4640/942. For any empty grid, enter 0.
After entering all the data into the tables in Excel, please answer the following questions and embed them in your summary report.
1. Which residential school is the first one open in Canada?
2. Which year has the most residential schools open?
3. What is the average living school capacity? Which school has the maximum living capacity?
4. Which year has the maximum attendance?
5. Which province has the maximum number of residential schools (combine Federal, Residential, and Company)?
Part 2: Convert the data into Access Tables
Table 1: Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources Hostels: rename it into Hostel List Hostel List (Name, Location, Province Code, Year opened, Living capacity) [Hint: Name and/or location of hostel needs to break into Name, location, and province, where Name is the primary key, e.g., Fleming Hall, Fort Mcpherson, NWT, you should enter as Fleming Hall under Name, Fort Mcpherson as Location and NT as Province Code. When entering the province, use the codes, e.g., NT for Northwest Territories, QC for Quebec, MB for Manitoba, ON for Ontario, AB for Alberta, etc.]
Table 2: Number of Inuit Students Attending Residential School by Year: rename it into Number of Students Number of Students (Type, Province Code, Year) [Hint: Type of School in the original table needs to break into Type and Province, e.g., Federal, NT. For the NWT and Quebec combination 1958, 1959, and 1960, let us split them as 800/58, 1000/159, and 1200/289 for simplification. Do NOT include the total attendance. Since we use the year as a field, the table will look different from the original table 2.] If you don’t know how to make this triple field CPK, watch the short video I made for you.
Once you have successfully created all three tables, please create the queries to answer the following questions. The tables themselves carry points as well. Even if you don’t know how to create the queries, you should finish the table part.
1) List all NWT schools and their living capacity
2) Find out the schools have more than 100 living capacity
3) Find out all the province (territories) in full names have residential schools
4) Find out all the year that AB has at least one attendance
5) Find out the total number of attendances of Federal Schools in all provinces and territories
6) Sort the year of NWT Residential schools by attendance
Save all your queries in the ACCESS file along with the three tables.
If you are a Mac user, you need to use a PC from your friend or family, go to the UFV lab or remotely control one of our UFV lab computers to complete this part. No other alternative software package is accepted.
Part 3: Draft the summary report
Based on David’s work, prepare a summary report with a minimum of four content pages, omitting the cover page, reference, and big pictures. You should have about four pages, roughly 1200 – 1600 words. You should include at least some of your Excel analysis and Access queries results in the report. Search more for residential schools in Canada, minimum of two additional references besides David’s report.
Once you have completed your report, please submit it to Turnitin. The course ID and enrollment key are in the other general instruction and Blackboard Announcement. You should use your UFV student email to create your account. If you have an existing account, directly use them. If you forgot your email and password, try to reset them. In the worst-case scenario, use a personal email. Ensure you have a similarity value of less than 15% (ideally less than 10%) to avoid penalty. You must submit the similarity report with your original word document to the Blackboard submission.
Part 4: Presentation in PowerPoint and video recording
You must create a PowerPoint file and use it to conduct a video-recorded presentation. You can use the loom (or any other software package you feel comfortable with). Your video should have the PPT as the background and your voice-over. It is preferred to show your face but is technically optional. The presentation should be about five minutes (no less than 4 minutes and 30 seconds, no more than 10 minutes). Use two clips if you need to. You should submit the video or the link to the video (e.g., loom, dropbox, SharePoint, etc.)
The presentation should follow the three major guidelines we discussed in class: the six-by-six rule, use images with proper copyrights, and manage your time per slice. The presentation targets the general public audience, an average Grade 12 science background. Please use simple, plain, and straight English. It would be best if you had some of the questions embedded (not necessarily all).
