Highlights
This assessment relates to the following course learning objectives (CLOs):
Task Description
This assessment aims at examining your knowledge in identifying, analysing and discussing risky human behaviour in large scale systems that cause cyber security attacks. You apply your knowledge gained during the modules to develop security controls to reduce the occurrence of these risks.
Task details
Problem Scenario In the lead-up to the next Australian Census, a growing debate surrounds the implementation of the online application system as many issues were experienced in the 2021 census. The online application system for the Australian Census aims to enable convenient, secure, and efficient input from anywhere with internet access. It can also streamline the data collection process, potentially increasing active participation. Furthermore, such a system maintains the integrity and accuracy of the Census results.
On the other hand, cyberattacks are unavoidably probable to occur on this online application system. The Australian Census board has asked you to provide an analysis report identifying potential cyber-attacks on the national Census online system as consequences of planned or unwanted behaviours of citizens who would use this system for completing the Census. Your report will enable the Australian Census board to give a detailed understanding of running a safe and secure data collection process using the online Census application system and enable them to provide necessary protections in this regard.
Task 1. Explain two (2) examples of how citizens can be attacked when using this system to input their information for the completing the Census. Discuss
a) how an unaware citizen can disrupt the online Census process if they accidentally run into a cyber security attack
b) what human-focussed controls could be put in place to help prevent citizens falling victim to such attacks.
Task 2. Identify and describe two (2) strategies that the cyber security team could use to ensure that the system development team of Australian Census online application system had the skills to be aware of and able to provide and/or react to cyberattacks in the online Census application system.
Task 3. Explain two (2) examples of
a) how Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be used as a weapon for malicious users to create more complicated cyber attacks to exploit human factors for the Australian Census online application system and
b) what controls could be used to mitigate against such attacks.
Task 4. Using the COM-B model
a) discuss the complex cybersecurity issues relating to the role of people in Australian Census online application system that affect a safe and accurate census data collection process
b) provide recommendations for the Australian Census Board to create a mature cyber security culture.
