Engineering Hydrology Statistical Assessment Answer
Assignment Task:
Precipitation is the single most important input for surface hydrology. It comes in various forms, but in Australia occurs mainly as rainfall. At the same time, air temperature affects both losses, as well as atmospheric storage capacity. It is hypothesized that climate change has led to a shift in the timing and recurrence interval of rain events and temperature patterns, throughout the country. In this assignment you will have to determine the statistical characteristics of the rainfall and daily maximum temperature patterns at a capital city in Australia since 1950 (where available).
Analysis:
- Determine the 1st, 5th, 25th, median, 75th, 95th, and 99th percentiles of the rain events for each available year since 1950 for your capital city.
- For the temperature, calculate the monthly mean maximum temperature for the period 1961-1990 (you can get the mean monthly maximum temperature from the BoM) and determine the anomaly of the daily maximum temperature for each day since 1950 (relative to the respective monthly value). For the period 1950-1974, 1975-1999, and 2000-now, plot the cumulative density function of those anomalies. Discuss whether there has been any change.
- Summarise your findings in a brief conclusion, discussing whether it is getting wetter
or drier, cooler or warmer, are the frequencies of the events changing etc.
