Highlights
This assignment requires the preparation of a durability plan for the specified structure situated in the specified environment to ensure that the structure operates as designed for the specified lifetime of the structure and considering the requirements and risks in associated with each phase of the structure lifetime.
The structure is an extension to Webb Dock situated at the mouth of the Yarra River in Melbourne. The structure will have a reinforced concrete substructure and deck consisting of reinforced concrete piles, beams, headstocks, pile caps, fender beans and deck slab. The superstructure and retaining wall will be steel. This includes sheet piles and loading frame.
The dock extension has a 100 years design life.
The dock should operate over this period with no major repair or rehabilitation but with normal maintenance and small scale repairs. It should be designed to avoid initiation of corrosion in the reinforcing steel during the design life.
The structure will be in a marine environment within Port Phillip Bay at the mouth of the Yarra River. There is no evidence of acid or sulphate in the soils in this location.
There are no large industrial sites in close proximity.
The durability plan shall cover the different stages of the structure;
1. Design Phase
2. Construction Phase
3. Operation Phase
This should be written as a technical report.
You can refer to all material in the lecture notes, tutorials and use any standards, advice documents etc that are appropriate. However, the report should NOT simply copy and past information from any source (this is plagiarism) and should NOT be a set of dot points. It may use relevant figures and tables with appropriate references. It should be a technical report providing a clear and detailed explanation for the rationale used to select the tests, standards, deterioration mechanisms, models and risks identified and discussed. (Presentation and Format of report 5 marks)
The specific tasks to be covered in each Phase are;
Design Phase (25 marks)
• Testing to determine environmental loading
• Identify appropriate standards and exposure categories
• Deterioration mechanisms considered
• Models employed to ensure the design life is achieved
• Material specification
o How to select concrete type and cover o How to select steel type o Any coatings or other protective measures to be applied o Design of elements to reduce durability problems
Construction Phase (10 marks)
• Quality Assurance that should be employed to ensure structure satisfies the design specification
• Deterioration mechanisms considered
Operation Phase (10 marks)
• Testing and monitoring
• Repair/Rehabilitation options available
