With traffic problems on Melbourne's main route to the airport approaching epidemic levels, much attention has been focused on Tullamarine Freeway. Driving along the Tullamarine Freeway takes almost three times longer in peak hour than it did just over a decade ago, with industry describing the congestion as a "disaster" costing millions of dollars.

• In 2000 it took just over 11 minutes in the morning peak period to travel along Tullamarine Freeway from Bulla Road to Sunbury Road — in 2020 the comparable journey was 36.5 minutes.

• Every work day, 63,000 vehicles use the freeway from Melburne to the airport, which was originally built to carry 20,000 vehicles a day.

• More than 8,000 vehicles use the freeway between 6am and 9am.

• By 2025 daily volumes on the freeway are expected to hit 75,000 (one way from Melbourne to the Airport).

What can be done to boost its capacity? Many ideas have been proposed, including adding additional lanes to the freeway, a railway to connect Melbourne airport to rail network, or even building a new freeway parallel to the existing one.

Option 1 – Railway from Melbourne airport to Sunshine station

A railway has been proposed to connect Melbourne airport to the rail network. This will ease the traffic at Tullamarine Freeway. The proposed railway would have two rail tracks (one for each direction). The line length is 27km, and number of station within the rout has not been decided.

Option 2 – Building a tunnel

Build two tunnels which connect Citylink (from Bulla road) to the airport. The tunnels are around 6km each and will have two lanes each direction.

Option 3 – Widening Tullamarine Freeway

The current Freeway has four lanes each way. Adding additional lanes to the freeway (one extra lane per direction) is the third option.
