Engineering Assessment Task
You will be allocated one vessel to consider. For your allocated vessel:
1. Identify the water plane shape (indicated by the red line) and determine the submerged volume (Vsub) and second moment of area (Iws).
2. Calculate the weight of the vessel from the buoyancy force (based on the submerged volume Vsub).
3. Plot a graph of dx versus dθ and use a linear trendline to derive the slope (dx/dθ).
4. Determine the Metacentric Height (GM) using the formula for the field technique. (Note: you should have multiple values of dx and dθ.)
5. Determine the centroid of the submerged volume. (This is also known as the centre of buoyancy,
B.) 6. Determine the distance from B to M (BM) using the theoretical formula: sub ws V I BM
7. Find the Metacentric Height (GM) based on the theoretical value for BM and the relative locations of B and G.
Determine relative (%) error between the two methods, and comment on likely discrepancies between the results. Consider the precision of the measurements (especially the angle dθ) when commenting on the magnitude of any error.
