Objective 

The objective of the assignment is to design a truss bridge which will span a minimum  distance of 36 inches and hold an 160 lb load distributed over three consecutive joints  (as shown in Fig.1).  

Tasks to be Completed 

1. Design a truss bridge which will span a minimum of 36 inches and hold a 160 lb load. The height and the width of the three-dimensional frame work should be a minimum of 5 inches. The bridge will contain two truss structures connected with  linking beams. 

Any designs can be used as templates such as the ones shown in the lecture or  found elsewhere in literature or internet. 

2. Truss Analysis 

Truss analysis will be done using a template similar to the one shown in

The 160 lb load will be distributed between three consecutive joints as shown in Fig. 1  (respectively 50 lb at joints C and G and 60 lb at joint E).  

Please be aware that in your calculations you will be using the actual  dimensions of your truss structure to calculate any slope triangles or the  moment arm. 

2a. Calculate support forces at pin connections A and B. 

2b. Calculate forces in tension or compression at the joints C, E, D, F, G using the  Method of Joints.
