Objective: Determine various plastic state properties of concrete. 

In this laboratory session, you will carry out several concrete consistency and plastic state tests  as specified below. You are required to batch 50 litres of concrete according to the following mix  design (for a 40 MPa concrete)*:

A. Batch and mix 50 litres of concrete. Record the slump of the mix. Make sure that you record  the amount of water added to be able to calculate the water: binder ratio for your mix.  Testing: Carry out the following tests: slump; VeBe and compacting factor. 

 Cast two 100 x 200 mm cylinders as per AS 1012.8 (compact by rodding).  B. To the remaining concrete in the mixer, add 50 ml of Sika Plastiment 10. Testing: Carry out the following tests: slump; compacting factor; air-content and mass/unit   Volume. 

 Cast two 100 x 200 mm cylinders, one 150 x 300 mm cylinder and one beam.  C. To the remaining concrete in the mixer, add 1000 ml water. 

Testing: Carry out the following tests: slump and air-content. 

 Cast two 100 x 200 mm cylinders and one 150 x 300 mm cylinder as per AS 1012.8   (compact by rodding). 

Notes:  

1 All specimens will be moist cured until testing. 

2 Compaction of test specimens for compression and Brazil tests: 

Cylinders 

? 150-mm-diameter cylinders. Fill in 3 equal layers, compacting each layer with 35 strokes  of a standard steel rod.

? 100-mm-diameter cylinders. Fill in 2 equal layers, compacting each layer with 25 strokes  of a standard steel rod. 

Tap the sides of the mould with a mallet to close any voids. 

Level the surface. 

3 Compaction of test specimens for flexural testing. 

Beams 

? 100x100x350-mm-long beams. Fill in 2 equal layers, compacting each layer with 55  strokes of a standard steel rod. 

? 150x150x500-mm-long beams. Fill in 2 equal layers, compacting each layer with 115  strokes of a standard steel rod. 

Tap the sides of the mould with a mallet to close any voids. 

Level the surface. 

Note: for other sizes of beams, compaction is 1 stroke for every 650 mm2of the surface. 

NOTE: Students should note that not all concrete mix quantities listed in table are a true  reflection of the way in which the concrete was mixed during the lab videos. Students are  expected to use to quantities stated in the lab videos as true representation of the concrete  mix and use this within their lab reports.  

Laboratory #2: Testing of Hardened Concrete 

Week 10 Friday 23 October 2020 Bld 4 High Bay Laboratory 

Objective: Determine various hardened state properties of concrete. 

In your second laboratory session, you will test the hardened concrete specimens. Tests to be carried out on the various specimens are: 

? Non-destructive: Pundit (ultrasonic); Schmidt hammer. 

? Destructive: compression (crushing 100 x 200 mm cylinders); indirect tension (Brazil – 150 x 300 mm cylinders) and flexure (4-point beam test on beams). 

EACH STUDENT is to write and submit a report concerning all aspects of the laboratory  demonstration procedures (Weeks 9 and 10 laboratory sessions). The results for the different  tests with and without the admixtures should be highlighted and compared. Reference should be  made to relevant Australian Standards.
