Task

Overview

1-the structure Discuss the location and project details including cost, construction schedule length and completion date. Include a few external photos, architectural snapshots and a site map (annotated google maps is acceptable).

2-Design documentation
Discuss the design documentation collected including any architectural/structural/shop drawings and geotechnical report. Discuss who you received the documentation from and provide their contact information. Any problems in obtaining documentation should be outlined. All referenced documentation in the final report is required to be submitted electronically through the supporting documentation submission link in vUWS.

3-Site visit documentation
Discuss your site visit(s) including the date, time and how long you spent on site. Also discuss who granted you entry and showed you around the site including their contact information. Briefly discuss what you observed on your visits.

4-Structural system
Detailed discussion of the key structural components used in your structure including:

4.1 Foundation material
4.2 Footing system used
4.3 Columns and/or load bearing walls
4.4 Beams and floor/slab system
4.5 Roof structure

In this section, you must include specific member sizing, material strengths and details for the common elements. This information will be used in section 5 to calculate the member strengths. Support your discussion with information researched in open literature to support why the engineer/client chose the specific material, cross-section, system etc. Comments on alternate options for materials, sizes or systems may also be provided where appropriate. Take snapshots of the structural drawings and annotate on the figures/photos to assist your discussions. Make comparisons between photos you have taken on site and structural drawings of the key structuralmembers.

5 Loads on the structure and member strength calculations
Discuss the types of loads acting on your structure and how these loads are resisted by the structural system. Support your discussions with information researched in open literature and reference clauses from the standards as required. Use annotated the figures/photos to assist your discussions where needed.

5.1 Vertical loads

Determine the floor actions (in kPa) acting on some common floors/roof of your structure using AS/NZS 1170.1.

5.2 Wind actions

• Determine the design wind speed (in m/s) acting on a wall of your structure using AS/NZS 1170.2,or

• Determine the design wind pressure (in kPa) acting on the middle of a wall and the corner of the roof of your structure using AS 4055.

5.3 Structural resistance of the frame
Discuss how the vertical loads are transferred to the foundation and discuss how your structure prevents lateral movement to resist wind actions.

5.4 Strength of members

Calculate the strength of 2 common structural members:
• Compressive strength of a column. Calculate squash load (section capacity) only. Provide your answer in kN and also convert to tonnes (if load bearing precast concrete walls are used, calculate using a 1 m width section of the wall)
• Flexural strength of a beam/rafter. Calculate section capacity (in kNm) and use the beam formulae to approximately determine the load carrying capacity (in tonnes/m)

6 Connection detail
Discuss in detail FIVE specific connections used in your chosen structure i.e. footing-column, beamcolumn, rafter-purlin, steel-concrete composite connections etc. Discuss all the specific elements in the connection and how the forces (axial, shear or bending) are transferred at these connections. For a steel structure, discussion may include bolts, plates, stiffeners, welds, connectors for each connection. Comment on the rigidity of the connection. For an RC structure, discussion may include reo laps, steel congestion, dowels, bar offsets, hooks/cogs, concrete strength continuity and cold joints.
Support your discussions with information researched in open literature to support why the engineer/client chose the specific material, connection type etc.
Take snapshots of the structural drawings or shop drawings and annotate on the figures/photos to assist your discussions.
Make comparisons between photos you have taken on site and the structural drawings of all five connections.

6.1 X-X connection. E.g. Connection 1 – Base plate
6.2 X-X connection. E.g. Connection 2 – Column splice
6.3 X-X connection
6.4 X-X connection
6.5 X-X connection

7 Structural detailing and construction
Discuss specific structural detailing and project specifics from the design/construction of your structure. Support your discussion with information researched in open literature to support why the engineer/builder has provided these specifications and reference clauses from the standards and NCC
as required. Choose any THREE from the following that are appropriate to your structure:

• concrete cover requirements
• post-tensioning cable detailing
• prefabricated components
• corrosion protection of structural steel
• fire protection of structural members
• cross-bracing of the steel frame
• material handling
• site management
• construction sequence

7.1 Detailing/construction aspect 1: XX
7.2 Detailing/construction aspect 2: XX
7.3 Detailing/construction aspect 3: XX
