Participation

Thoughtful class participation is critical for the success of this module. Engagement with the readings and active participation are crucial. In preparation, you are expected to complete all the assigned readings and attend all classes. A response paper is expected.

Response Paper

Students will write a response of no more than words to a set of readings. The responses should not be a summary, but in presenting the argument should address a major theme or debate in the module, raise questions for discussion or for further clarification, and offer comments and observations. 

Essay

1. Students will write an essay of no more than 3000 words based on the readings in defence and International Relations. The essay should address a question posed, presenting, and defending an argument. You should show an understanding of the chapter and articles and how they relate to each other. These may not be summaries of the content without analysis as this is an analytical, not descriptive exercise. No additional sources are required, and you should focus on the assigned work.

2. Students will write an essay of no more than words based on the readings on Civil-Military Relations. The essay should address a question posed, presenting, and defending an argument. You should show an understanding of the chapter and articles and how they relate to each other. These may not be summaries of the content without analysis as this is an analytical, not descriptive exercise. No additional sources are required, and you should focus on the assigned work.

Research Paper

In consultation with the Lecturer, MPhil students submit one Research Paper on their chosen topic. A post-graduate research paper should be seen as preparation for submitting a research article to a scholarly journal. Like an original academic article considered for publication, the research paper should frame a research question, review existing literature, provide a coherent argument, and conclude with original insight. Research questions are first to be discussed with me.
