Clinical Nurse Specialist (Anaesthesia and PACU) within the Main Operating Theatre of Waterfront Health’s primary hospital, working within both Anaesthetics and the PostAnaesthetic Care Unit (PACU).

The Main Operating Theatre unit comprises of 10 “primary” operating theatres, with anaesthetics and PACU staff also responsible for assisting with cases “off the floor” that require sedation or general anaesthesia - such as the cardiac cath lab and interventional radiology. There is a Stage 1 PACU and a Stage 2/Discharge unit incorporated into the theatre suite.

Due to being the primary regional health service on the Western side of the state, Waterfront Health receives a broad variety of patient demographics (including paediatrics) and has 2 dedicated general emergency theatres overnight, plus an on-call cardiac team after hours.

The Anaesthetic and PACU nurse role filled by the author is in line with the Australian College of Operating Room Nurses (ACORN) expectations of the position – with an anaesthetic nurse ensuring safety pre and intra-operatively through assistance to both the patient and the anaesthetist (airway management, pharmacology, patient advocation), and a PACU nurse providing holistic care to the patient in the immediate post-operative phase until the patient is ready for discharge from the operating suite (ACORN, 2019)
