Scenario
You are commencing an evening shift as a student nurse (SN) in a male surgical ward. You have just received handover from the staff on the morning shift in the Staff Room. One of your allocated patients, Mr Mandeep Singh, 76 years of age, recovering from removal of his appendix 2 days ago. The handover informs that Mr Singh has been experiencing episodes of confusion and disorientation, particularly with locating his room since his surgical procedure. As you approach him, you see he is visibly distressed by his facial expression. He looks at you and says softly, “Excuse me, can you tell my nurse to come and help me to my bed, as I can’t see them anywhere.” As you try to remind him you are his nurse, he pushes you away and raises his voice at you, telling you to leave him alone and calls out “nurse, nurse, help me.” At that moment, his son arrives, asking what has happened on finding his father distressed and crying. He looks at you, stating loudly, “Who are you? What did you do to my Dad? Why is he so upset?”
Scenario
You are on clinical placement, assigned to an aged care facility. You are buddied with one of the nursing staff members for the day and they have asked you to help with an assisted shower for resident Mrs. Evelyn “Evie” Nyguen, a 92 year old Vietnamese woman who has partial hearing loss and wears a hearing aid that has been removed for her shower. As you commence the shower, the nurse accepts a call on her mobile phone and tells you quickly she must leave the shower to take the call. You are left alone with Evie in the bathroom. Evie becomes distressed on realizing the facility nurse has left and starts to shout, “No, no, stop what you’re doing! You aren’t washing me properly”. Evie then grabs the shower nozzle out of your hand and starts showering you with water. As you attempt to remove the shower from her hand, the nurse returns, questioning you loudly, “What is happening? Why is Evie so upset? I can hear her shouting out in the ward!”
