Highlights
Task Summary
The underlying theme of this Assessment relates to the exploration of the contemporary development of COVID-19 predictive models. Such models are a form of artificial intelligence (AI) (Jiang et al., 2020) that use statistical machine learning (ML) models of classification and regression to make predictions. In developing the predictive models, the focus is on the actual method not the final answer.
You are expected to submit a 750-word report comparing and contrasting COVID-19 prediction
models.
Please refer to the Task Instructions (below) for details on how to complete this task.
Context
Statistical ML is helping to solve some of the biggest challenges facing the human race, including COVID-19. Many of the data sets available for COVID-19 are statistical and ideally suitable for the development of dashboards or the exploration of aggregate trends; however, very little clinical or case data are readily accessible for the development of predictive models.
This Assessment on COVID-prediction models comprises two parts:
Part 1—Using COVID-19 patients’ geographical, travel, health and demographic data to predict the severity of the cases and possible outcomes (e.g., recovery or death).
Part 2—Writing a 750-word report on COVID-19 prediction models.
The hands-on approach to assessing the current literature in a major field of public interest and safety while reproducing and testing statistical ML models to solve a big problem will have direct applicability in your future career. Thus, one approach to stay abreast of technological breakthroughs in statistical ML and AI is keeping track of applications directly impact society and uppermost in the minds of the public. Motivated individuals who are driven by curiosity and capable of thinking big will be highly sought after for roles involving data by both your current and future employers.
Task Instructions
To complete this assessment task, follow the instructions below.
Part 1: Predict the Severity of the Cases and a Possible Outcome
1. Download and read the article entitled ‘COVID-19 patient health prediction using boosted random forest algorithm’ (Iwendi et al., 2020; see link below). Reproduce the predictive models in this article by following the steps in each section:
Use the markdown in your Notebook to comment on any of your results that significantly
depart from the published material. Note that the allocation of marks focuses on the
method, not the actual or published answers.
Part 2: COVID-19 Prediction Model Write-UpAdopt the following structure for your 750-word report:
