Highlights
Task Summary
This Assessment requires you to complete a 1,000-word report on contemporary trends in classification and regression. You are required to review a minimum of 10 journal articles, synthesise the articles and draw conclusions about the themes and discrepancies. A diverse array of resources are available for input to help generate your report.
Please refer to the Task Instructions (below) for details on how to complete this task.
Context
The pace of change in artificial intelligence (AI) is accelerating. In the future, you will often receive requests to write reports to help you and work colleagues remain abreast of the effects of AI on your workplace. For example, you may be asked to undertake a review of key areas relating to AI, such as predictive analytics or fraud detection, as part of a business case or proposal for new analytics software.
In this Assessment you will have the opportunity to demonstrate not only your research capabilities on AI topics but also your communication, writing and analytical skills. Such skills are critical to satisfy the workplace demands previously discussed.
The ability to conduct a review on a topic of interest will help you to keep up with the most current state of knowledge in AI and understand new concepts, practices and trends while getting to know the most prominent researchers and developers in the field.
In your review, you will summarise the current knowledge in the field and evaluate a variety of readings and online resources relevant to the aim of seeking out contemporary trends in classification and regression. Be mindful of the difference between classification and regression models in machine learning while conducting your review. Most importantly, a good review writer synthesises the readings and avoids just writing individual paragraphs about each resource consulted. The objective should not be to create a review that focuses on each source one by one, but one that focuses on topics emerging from connections between the source materials to form a whole review. You should also seek to consider a diverse range of sources and avoid providing too much detail from one source, such as a single article or research study.
Task Instructions
The following steps will help you complete the Assessment. Focus on contemporary trends in classification and regression in your review.
You are required to submit a 1,000-word report as the deliverable for this Assessment.
1) Search Strategy, Database Resources and Online Communities
You can use these search strings to find the resources; for example:
Alternately, if you wish to focus on a particular area of interest, your search string should specify the context; for example:
Note: Some of the articles will consider classification and regression as a form of AI due to the ability of these techniques to predict values or categories. In light of this, your search strategy and strings might include the terms ‘ai’ or ‘artificial intelligence’ or ‘predictive’.
2) Ensure that the articles you consult are contemporary and were published within the last 3– 5 years. Owing to the contemporary nature of your readings, not all articles will be peer reviewed and/or sourced from a database like Scopus or the Google Scholar service. You are encouraged to consult a wide variety of resources. This includes pre-prints; that is, research papers that are available before final printing and that have not yet been subject to peer review.
On another note, it is unlikely that you will find suitable readings and references in popular magazines; however, grey literature, including technical reports, whitepapers, press releases and the website content of AI software vendors, could be helpful.
3) Review at least 10 journal articles from a variety of sources, including peer-review articles, preprints, grey literature and online communities. As a minimum, check the abstracts of each article for relevance and your interest level before finalising your list of sources. Ten is the minimum number of articles to consider for a passing grade; however, you are encouraged to consider more. Avoid getting bogged down in your reading, and take notes as you go through the resources. You should initially skim the texts for trends.
4) After reviewing the articles, you need to synthesise your readings. A suggested way of synthesising is to use a grid to organise the common points in each resource or article, making a note of the common ideas to help form categories representing the trends. See the example table below.
