Scenario 1 Mrs Yu Yan McFarlane (questions 1 - 5 refer to this scenario)

I: Mrs Yu Yan McFarlane is a 38-year old female.
S: She had an abdominal hysterectomy two (2) days ago. She has an indwelling catheter insitu, a wound drain and an IVT.
B: Yu Yan lives at home with her husband, her elderly mother and 3 children, 3 year old twins and 17 year old son. Yu Yan suffers with anxiety and poor self-image. Yu Yan is embarrassed when undressing in front of nursing staff and is reluctant to ask for help.
A: Yu Yan is on four (4) hourly observations. The most recent recorded observations were:

· Temperature 36.5 °C
· Respirations 22
· HR 110
· BP 135/80mmHg
· SpO2 98% on room air
· 7/10 abdominal pain

Yu Yan has received opioid analgesia for two (2) days and has reported that she has not opened her bowels.

R: continue post-operative care, assess, monitor and treat pain, gentle mobilisation. One person assist with ADLs. Fluid diet.

Question 1 
Yu Yan has a wound drain and indwelling catheter insitu after her surgery. Outline the nursing care requirements for wound drains and indwelling catheter. In your response also consider privacy and dignity considerations when caring for a client with a wound drain and indwelling catheter.

Discuss your understanding of why a client may need an indwelling catheter. What is one (1) complication associated with inserting an indwelling catheter. Describe how you, as an Enrolled nurse, can decrease this possible complication from occurring.
