Nursing Assessment Answer

Assignment Task: CMHL1001 Answer the following question in relation to your chosen journal article: You are a newly graduated health or social care professional. You are working in the area related to your chosen article and your Head of Department has asked for your opinion regarding the intervention described in your research paper. The Head of Department is considering whether to further implement the intervention studied in this research paper. CMHL1001 What would your response be to your Head of Department? Justify your response with the evidence from the findings of your chosen journal article (incorporating your critical review) and by using a minimum of two other peer-reviewed journal articles to support your opinion. Your response should include the following: ? A brief summary of the main findings of your chosen article. ? The main strengths and the main limitations of your chosen paper. Comment on how these influence the trustworthiness (reliability/validity) of the study. ? Your recommendation based on the above, as well as two peer-reviewed articles that specifically support your recommendation. You should provide sufficient detail for the articles as justification for why you selected these articles. ? Correct APA 6 the in?text and end?text citations (i.e. reference list) for your nominated article and two additional supporting articles. ? Structure and language - this refers to how well you structure your argument, your use of language e.g., spelling and grammar and academic writing conventions. Example : CMHL1001 Topic: Using a GameBike as an intervention for obesity In an effort to combat rising obesity and overweight levels in youth, researchers conducted a study into the effects of interactive video games compared to stationary cycling to music on various physiological markers (Adamo, Rutherford, & Goldfield, 2010). Although both groups showed improvements and weight loss, the findings suggest that, in addition to being cheaper, stationary cycling to music was as effective, or more effective, than cycling with interactive video games in adolescents aged 12 to 17 years (Adamo et al., 2010). CMHL1001 Due to its rigorous study design, the paper can say with a high degree of definitiveness that stationary cycling to music is more effective than interactive video games; as the experiment conducted was the highest level of primary study design, randomised control trial (in this instance, parallel), that produced statistically significant results (Adamo et al., 2010). The study was conducted with ethical approval from the hosting hospital’s research committee and provided a clinical trial registration number, as well as transparently listing the incentives it offered to participants (Adamo et al., 2010). Although no readily apparent bias was evident in the results, it should be noted that the authors did not include a section declaring any conflicts of interest (Adamo et al., 2010). The study used well defined operational definitions that lend the experiment to being both internally valid, as well as replicable elsewhere. Furthermore, the study also used objective measurements of outcomes that allow for accurate independent corroboration through experimentation (Adamo et al., 2010). The stratified random sampling from the ensured groups were representative of the theoretical population and stratified random of participants ensured groups had a statistically similar baseline. Furthermore, these groups remained mostly unaffected by dropouts, which occurred early and did not alter group characteristics (Adamo et al., 2010). However, the small sample size lessens the generalisability of the study to the wider population. In addition, the non-probability convenience sampling from only one hospital and the non-blinded nature of the study further limits the external validity of the experiment (Adamo et al., 2010). CMHL1001 The finding that video games were not effective in this instance does not mean that the intervention is wholly ineffective and may not be useful in alternative populations. Another study has found that interactive video games may lessen the perceived level of exertion in adults, resulting in a more relaxed exercise session despite working harder (Glen, Eston, Loetscher, & Parfitt, 2017). A systematic analysis of obesity-related behaviours from childhood to adulthood found that exercise and dietary behaviours carry on from one to the other (Craigie, Lake, Kelly, Adamson, & Mathers, 2011). Another study built upon these findings and sought to change children’s perception and attitudes to exercise by promoting positive emotions and experiences of exercise through interactive video game exercises, finding positive perceptions of exercise, particularly in those who had had prior positive experiences of interactive exercise video games (Ho, Lwin, Sng, & Yee, 2017). With this in mind, I believe that there may yet be a role for exercise video games in improving health; I recommend further research into different populations, and corroboratory research of previously investigated populations with larger samples will help to identify what role, if any, video games can play in the future of health. In the meantime, until these studies are completed, it is my clinical recommendation that we continue to use cycling to music to promote adherence rather than the GameBike program.
