Assignment Task

Summary

This assessment details the second part of a report; the first part must have been earlier submitted as Assessment 1.1. In the overall report the students will apply at least three variations of modern optimisation methods on an acceptably challenging problem, and report the findings in an excellent academic style. However, the report will be submitted as two deliverables, namely, Assessment 1.1 and Assessment 1.2. This coursework concerns Assessment 1.2.

Assessment 1.2 will implement the proposals made in Assessment 1.1; the proposals must be revised as per any feedback received. The implementation should numerically compare the attempted optimisation methods; this numerical comparison must be supported by tests of statistical significance. Also, a qualitative justification of the numerical comparison must be provided; this qualitative justification must be based on a brief but highly relevant literature review.

For completion, this second deliverable (Assessment 1.2) should also include the most updated version of Assessment 1.1. Content pertaining Assessment 1.1 must be clearly highlighted because it will not count towards the word limit for Assessment 1.2.

Rationale

The rationale of the overall assessment is to check whether the students can:

  • Identify challenging problems (either theoretical or practical in their nature) from the domain of optimisation;
  • Critique various optimisation methods as to how they suit these problems;
  • Justify their choice of optimisation methods in the light of previous research/practice;
  • Compare the performance of various optimisation methods via statistical tests;
  • Provide intuitive or theoretical justification of the numerical performances;
  • And report the overall argument using excellent standards of writing that are highly demanded in a work environment.

The highlighted parts are assessed in Assessment 1.2, but the remaining parts are also given to show how Assessment 1.2 fits into the overall picture.

Description

The students must complete the following activities to complete Assessment 1.2 .

  • The students must show their developing work for Assessment 1.2 to module tutors during lecture sessions and submit a draft version of Assessment 1.2 (Moodle submission by 9AM Monday, teaching week 12 ). By this deadline, students must also consult the module tutors on how to receive feedback on their draft work. To quickly resolve such issues, students must consult their module tutors during the lecture sessions .
  • During the teaching session in week 12 , each student will peer-review three student-submissions and will submit a feedback form (PDF) and peer-reviewed student reports with inline comments. The lecturer will randomly select one of the submissions from each student and evaluate it. This will carry 10% marks and will be graded as a part of Assessment 1.2. See additional information below for further details.
  • Each student will submit Assessment 1.2 as a written report as detailed in Additional Information below.
