Unit description

This unit introduces you to human growth and physical development, major body systems and health assessment across the lifespan. Approaches to health assessment will be introduced, with the integration of foundational anatomy and physiology. You will begin to develop the capacity to utilise a clinical reasoning framework and person-centred approach to conduct a focused health interview, perform physical assessments and communicate assessment findings.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

1. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the structure and general functions of body systems, including variations across the lifespan.

2. Apply principles of clinical reasoning and person-centred care to assess and interpret, at a beginning level, vital signs, cardiovascular and respiratory health status.

3. Accurately measure and document vital signsdata.

4. Communicate biological and health assessment information in written and verbal format.

Alterations to the unit as a result of student feedback

In response to feedback we received from students and the teaching team on the previous offering of Health Assessment 1, we have made some minor changes to the unit schedule so that the final two weeks of the semester are dedicated to opportunities for knowledge and clinical skills revision. We hope this change will better support your preparation for the exam and building your confidence for success in that final assessment.

We welcome your feedback on your learning experience in this unit – at any time during the semester and via the eVALUate survey

Prior knowledge and/or skills

A basic understanding of foundation chemistry concepts, equivalent to year 9/10 science, will be assumed. Supporting resources will be available through MyLO if you do not have this prior knowledge.

UNIT SCHEDULE

The unit schedule on the following page outlines the classes that you will engage in throughout the semester:

• Lectures: 2 hours per week (a combination of face-to-face and online)

• Practicals: 2 hours per week (in semester weeks 1-10, 12-13, and an in-class assessment in week 11)

In addition to the scheduled classes listed, you will also need to commit up to 2 hours per week for completion of online guided self-learning activities in preparation for the lectures and practical sessions. For successful completion of this unit you will also need to devote extra time for private study (either in study groups, peer assisted study sessions or individually) and completion of assessment tasks.

Individual schedules for each campus are provided on MyLO.

Assessment Task 2A: Clinical reasoning report

This assessment task aims to develop your ability to apply selected phases of the clinical reasoning process, at an introductory level, to an assigned patient scenario.

In your written report you will need to:

• Provide a concise summary of your assigned patient’s situation.

• List the objective and subjective data (cues) that you have gathered from reviewing the patient scenario information provided.

You will need to use relevant scholarly sources of information (textbooks, journal articles, evidence-based practice guidelines or clinical care standards) to support your analysis of your patient’s health information. The Harvard referencing style should be used for citation of information sources throughout the text (in-text referencing) and a reference list at the end of the report.
