Assessment task 1: Search report
Task In this task you will demonstrate your ability to develop a clinical Description
question about appropriate areas of nursing or healthcare practice, and plan and execute a search of the literature to find evidence to answer this question. In your report, you will:
Identify an issue or situation from practice or in healthcare that requires an evidence-informed approach; Explain and explore the reasons why this issue is important for a registered nurse to understand, drawing on the literature to support your argument;
Develop a searchable question using an appropriate framework; Design a research strategy, including database choice, key terms, and Boolean operators (tables may be used for this section), and use this to carry out your search; and Identify four research articles that address your question, choosing these from the highest possible available evidence sources with
reference to an appropriate hierarchy. You are required to include a screenshot of the search history from your database searches. The evidence you find will form the basis for your second assessment task.
• Develop a searchable question using an appropriate framework; From your explanation of the issue in the first section, identify the aspects that you will be exploring in this research task. You will choose an appropriate question framework (eg PICO(T), PICO, PEO) and explain why this is the best one to use for your area of interest, supporting this with reference to scholarly literature.
Explain the individual elements of the framework, with references, and then identify these elements for your own question. Ensure that each element is as clear and focused as possible; avoid generalisations (such as 'effective' outcomes, as these could be anything!). Refine and narrow where necessary, as this will make choosing search terms much easier and also make your search more efficient.
Using your elements, formulate a searchable question. Ensure all aspects of the framework you have used are included, and make it a question, not a statement - it must end with a ?
The search
This section will set out in detail the way in which you conducted your search, so your reader could replicate this. It will demonstrate that you have found the most appropriate articles.
Database choice:
You should use more than one database for this task, as no database covers all possible sources. For example, the Cochrane Library is wonderful for systematic reviews, but you will not find cutting-edge research there because it takes time for a topic to have sufficient research carried out to be able to perform a systematic review. Support your choice of database by reference to the database's own homepage and/or scholarly literature - nursing research texts often recommend particular databases for particular types of research or topics.
The search strategy:_Explain how you carried out your searches, including how you combined your search terms with Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) and the results you achieved in each database. You can describe these Inclusion and exclusion criteria: Explain how you decided which articles to look at and which to reject; eg if your question has an aged care setting, you excluded any studies carried out in an acute care setting. Give a rationale for your inclusion and exclusion criteria, using scholarly literature to support your argument if necessary.
The articles
In this section you should cite the four articles you have chosen, and give a brief evaluation of how they relate to your question and the level of evidence they provide.
in sentences, or again, you may use a table to set out this information eg:
In this assessment task, you will demonstrate your ability to develop clinical questions about appropriate areas of nursing or healthcare practice and to search the literature effectively for evidence to answer these questions. You will be required to:
• Identify an issue or situation from practice or in healthcare that requires an evidence
informed approach; Provide a brief discussion of the three elements in the evidence-informed practice (EIP) triad, and explain and explore the reasons why this issue is important for a registered nurse to understand, drawing on the literature to support your argument; Develop a searchable question using an appropriate framework; Design a search strategy, including database choice, key terms, and Boolean operators to link these (tables may be used for this section), and use this to carry out your search; and Identify four research articles that address your question, choosing these from the
highest possible evidence sources with reference to an appropriate hierarchy. You are required to include a screenshot of the search history from your database searches.
The articles you find will form the basis for your second assessment task.
1. Identifies a topic that requires an evidence-informed approach, and justifies its importance to nursing practice. Your topic may be one that has arisen in one of your practical placements (for example, an intervention or technique that has been carried out in different ways by different nurses, or something new that you would like to know more about), or it may be an area of practice that particularly interests you, or an issue that relates to yourself or a family member. While we would prefer you to choose a nursing-specific topic, you are welcome to look at a wider area of healthcare if you can justify why a registered nurse would need to know this. This should be related back to the nursing codes and standards for practice, and with reference to the EIP triad.
2. Designs a searchable clinical question using an appropriate framework. Depending on the type of question you are asking (ie qualitative or quantitative), you may choose to use PICO, PEO, PICO, or any other framework you may have found that works for you. Remember to reference the framework and explain it briefly (all components identified), to demonstrate your understanding and why you have chosen it. Identify the elements of the question formula in your clinical question.
3. Demonstrates the ability to locate research relevant to the topic, using a well constructed search strategy; search history included as an appendix. In this section you should describe your search in detail, to demonstrate that you have made a comprehensive effort to find the best available evidence to answer your question. The
description should be sufficient that your reader could replicate it and come up with similar results. You should include:
the databases you chose to search, and why you made this choice (referencing is needed to justify this) the keywords or terms you used, the synonyms you included, and how you combined these to form your searches (some explanation of Booleans and their effects is needed here). You may use tables to set this out clearly. how successful your searches were, across different databases. The number of results you get will give you insight into the state of evidence on your topic, which will be beneficial for assessment task 2. Again, a table may be used to set out this information
clearly.
4. Selects four research articles and accurately identifies the level of evidence these provide. Four research articles should be found using this search strategy, with preference given to high-level evidence. Please note that you MUST use research papers for this assignment, and for assessment task 2. General discussion papers, CPE (continuing professional education) papers, and clinical guidelines, although very useful in normal professional practice, are NOT appropriate for this assessment task - see boxes below. Appropriate research articles for this assessment task: Primary research: articles describing a single study, written by the researchers themselves. These articles will explain how the study was carried out and the results of that study.
