Highlights
Introduction to the issue
To begin your report, Introduce the issue / topic that you are interested in, and justify why you as a nurse should know about it.
The question and the question framework
In this section you will develop your question using the elements of an appropriate question framework.
Related marking criterion:
• Develop a searchable question using an appropriate framework;
From your explanation of the issue in the first section, identify the aspects that you will be exploring in this research task. You will choose an appropriate question framework (eg PICO(T), PICo, PEO) and explain why this is the best one to use for your area of interest, supporting this with reference to scholarly literature.
Explain the individual elements of the framework, with references, and then identify these elements for your own question. Ensure that each element is as clear and focused as possible; avoid generalisations (such as ‘effective’ outcomes, as these could be anything!). Refine and narrow where necessary, as this will make choosing search terms much easier and also make your search more efficient.
Using your elements, formulate a searchable question. Ensure all aspects of the framework you have used are included, and make it a question, not a statement – it must end with a?
The articles
In this section you should cite the four articles you have chosen, and give a brief evaluation of how they relate to your question and the level of evidence they provide.
Related marking criterion
• Identify four research articles that address your question, choosing these from the highest possible available evidence sources with reference to an appropriate hierarchy.
Identify four suitable research articles (primary or secondary) to answer your question, and give full citations for these. You do NOT need to appraise the quality of the content of these studies in this assessment; you will be doing that in Assessment Task 2, using an appropriate evaluation tool. At this stage, we just need you to explain why the articles you have identified provide high level evidence* with regard to the type of question you are asking. For example, if your question is looking at the long-term results of an exercise intervention twelve months after stroke, a cohort longitudinal study would be an excellent source of information on this and provide higher level evidence than a cross-sectional study, which only looks at one point in time. You also do not need to answer your question in this assessment piece; that will also be done in Assessment Task 2.
