This unit will examine altered cell biology, epidemiology and the technologies used to detect and treat cancer. Non-evidence based treatments for cancers are also discussed. Interactive case studies across a broad range of specializations are used to demonstrate understanding of unit content.
Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
1. Examine applied biological, genetic, pathophysiology and epidemiological theories underpinning cancer risk, prevention, screening, diagnostic classification and staging.
2. Apply advanced clinical assessment and problem solving skills related to the holistic care of the oncology patient, including evidence based approaches to cancer nursing care.
3. Describe a variety of treatment modalities including chemotherapy, biotherapy, pharmacogenomics, radiation and surgical strategies used to treat, manage and/or palliate the oncology & haematology patient.
4. Reflect on current practice, identifying areas for development or innovation.
Task Description
Select a cancer patient for your case review. Ensure you maintain patient confidentiality by assigning the person a pseudonym and abide by your organizations ethics policy on using patient information and confidentiality.
Your case review should include:
• Assessment of a patient including- describe and provide some contextual background including the diagnosis, cancer biology and subtype; demographic characteristics -making associated links to their cancer’s clinical features, pathophysiology, epidemiology and immunological and hormonal assay aspects.
• Prior significant presenting signs and symptoms (weight loss, bleeding, SOB, infections -etc.) of their cancer diagnosis and your rationale & interpretation of their significance;
• Any Screening and early detection strategies;
• Define & describe cancer stage and grade (TNM/equivalent appropriate staging system) tumor markers & biomarkers,
• Undertake a comprehensive history to identify factors in addition to the cancer stage and grade which are important for optimal outcomes related to treatment decision making e.g. performance status, comorbidities, medications, lifestyle, risk factors and/or genetic predispositions if any,
