Highlights
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
1. Identify and apply theories of adult learning to teaching practice,
2. Explore methods of teaching as they apply to the healthcare setting and the diverse needs of learners,
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the evaluation of teaching and the provision of feedback.
Task 1:
For this assessment, you will be placed into a small group of students. This assessment has a Part A and a Part B.
• Part A
Assessing competency has often been problematic in the health setting. Reflect on your past experiences of teaching provide an example of what may be regarded as “competent”. Your discussion should also include a definition of clinical competence in healthcare settings. Students are expected to make their first post within 72 hours of the opening of the discussion space.
• Part B Subsequent posts
For the remainder of the discussion, you are required to contribute and respond to the discussion of others in your group. By drawing on the literature and providing evidence of engagement with the course materials, provide further discussion on the differences between capability and competency.
Task 2:
In this paper, you will reflect on the context of your teaching. Pedagogy in the 21st century has created new challenges in teaching. Using the Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle, you will need to reflect and briefly describe one teaching experience you found challenging related to 21st-century learners. You will then need to compare and
explore your experience from the perspective of the learning and teaching using adult learning and teaching methods and the academic literature. Include how the knowledge generated will impact your future practice.
Task 3:
Essay topic
I think it’s very important to have a feedback loop, where you’re constantly thinking about what you’ve done and how you could be doing it better. – Elon Musk
We all need people who will give us feedback. That’s how we improve. – Bill Gates
Consider one or both statements above and the characteristics of 21st-century learner and feedback. You can write your essay from the perspective of an educator, clinical leader, clinical facilitator, health professional or a blend of the above. In your writing, you should take a position as to how a program of education in your health setting could be constructed to reflect contemporary teaching and learning practices. Apply relevant teaching and learning theories in your discussion. Commence the paper with a literature review which introduces the attributes of a contemporary learner and how health care education has adopted (or not) learning strategies that address some or none of the principles of 21st-century learning. This section should be linked to evidence in the academic literature. Then consider a recent program you have attended and how the content and delivery met or did not meet the principles of 21st-century learner described in the literature. Make evidence-based recommendations for program improvement.
