Highlights
1. Objectives
The purpose of this assessment item is to assess your skills attributable to the following learning outcomes and achieving the expected graduate attributes of advanced level communication, knowledge, cognitive, technical, and creative skills, and self-management.
• Develop distributed applications using networking, inter-process communication, and remote invocation
• Solve problems in the distributed systems domain by applying the principles of distributed systems to authentic problems
2. Assessment task
Your task in this assessment is to analyse the given problem, model, design, implement, test and document a client/server application that allows multiple users to access stored data or add new data. You will be implementing the software solution, applying efficient algorithms, inheritance, polymorphism, and exception handling. The topics required for this assessment task are from Weeks 1-4. You should also write a report, as specified in this document, demonstrating your conceptual knowledge. You will be required to use the topics learnt in the pre-requisite unit Data Structures and Algorithms.
2.1 Problem
People living without proper accommodation on an ongoing basis remains a problem world wide which is generally reported as ‘homelessness’. An appropriate accommodation is essential for a person’s well-being. On the Census night in 2016, more than 116,000 people were estimated to be homeless in Australia—58% were male, 21% were aged 25–34 and 20% identified as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians (ABS 2018). As of June 2016, there were 194,592 applicants waiting for social housing across the country’s social housing programs (Patterson, 2017).
CQUni Dignified Shelter is an initiative promoted by the Social Innovation team who is working on the change maker project to address “entrenched” social issues. CQUni Dignified Shelter aspires to tackle the problem of homelessness in innovative ways by using information and communication technology to collect data, increase advocacy and if needed employ crowd funding to raise money. The very basic requirement for addressing the issue is to have accurate information on each homeless person. Therefore, the directors have decided to have a Residence Need Solution System (RNSS) to accurately capture and store data from available sources and make it accessible to government agencies and other relevant service providers.
You are invited to design and develop an initial prototype for the RNSS. The prototype needs to have only limited functionality as described below. The initial data collection will be focusing on adults in the age group of twenty to sixty or families where parents are in the age group below sixty. The RNSS will be designed to collect data about people living in various arrangements such as:
• Rough sleeping
A term used to indicate people sleeping with no shelter such as roadsides, shop verandas, parks, and any such unsheltered places
