TASK:
To preface this journal, I would like to state that I haven’t truly been able to form my views and beliefs about Indigenous Australians rather developed perception about the Indigenous Australian culture and identity. I have gained different arrays of knowledge and understanding in this unit but in this journal, I would like to focus on the culture and identity of Indigenous Australians. Culture is generally a learned process, Indigenous Australia demonstrates diversity in culture, religion, social and economic organization (Hampton & Toombs 2013). Being the descendants of the traditional owners of land and country Australian population consists of various cultural sources. In an aspect of culture, the perception of national identity is neglected widely. Exclusion from society impacted Indigenous Australians place and role in the society denying their acceptance and recognition of their culture and identity (Hampton & Toombs 2013). This reflects issues of racism and poor self-image.
Colonialism led to struggles around Indigenous Identity raising questions of ‘who’ is considered Indigenous and what are the characteristics that identify as Indigenous (Carlson 2016). Thus, their position in the country has always been questioned. Indigenous Australians are recognized as the descendants of the original inhabitants but culturally different from other Australians (Carlson 2016). Being part of the culture is a state of mind as adherence to beliefs, values, customs, and traditions. The question of Indigenous identity was raised after colonization. Dispossession of land forced Indigenous people to search for a sense of identity. This led to Indigenous people being dislocated from homeland affecting their life expectancy, trauma, disease, homicide (Carlson 2016). The learning in this unit has made me realize a whole new way of life, situations, and what Indigenous people have gone through in the past and are still facing challenges in diverse aspects of life. It helped me understand the whole thought process involved in Indigenous life whose vision of wellbeing revolves around a culture that relates to other aspects such as country, identity, family, history. Indigenous people have explored and analyzed the process of self-actualization through the relation of cosmos elements providing insights into existence and interdependence.
