Task: This mind map describes the process of Colonisation, which is a process of movement by a large number of immigrants to a new land, establishing their colony and forcefully feeding their new culture to inhabitants of that location. From my understanding colonisation has been developed by a series of events which caused a lots of impacts. The Colonisation began in 1788, when the first fleet arrived with 11 ships containing British convicts and soldiers landed on the eastern side of the country. Most of the convicts were farmers or labours so they did not just move a group of convicts but they moved the whole new society. The founder Captain James Cook considered the land as “terra nullius” - land belongs to no one. (Barta, 1987). So they never had any negotiations with the inhabitants of the land thus this this lead them to a big conflict between the indigenous and the British colonists. They started seizing their lands and causing the aboriginals to move away towards the reserves. There were massacres everywhere during that time as aborigines tried to preserve their land and the British colonials were trying to capture the lands for their settlers. Around 20000 of indigenous and 2500 colonials were killed during the battle between the two (Reynolds, 2006). Task Description Create a concept map (mind map) from your understanding of what colonisation is, this is not a labour intensive assignment. You are to read your readings for week 1,2 and 3 and do your own research. You are to include what you think are the core concepts and sub concepts. You are to provide a reference list of readings that influence your understanding. Watch the recommended Youtube video on mind mapping. We want to know your understanding of colonisation. This will be evident through the combination of the Mindmap diagram and the accompanying 750 word annotation.
