Highlights
Read the assignment scenario below. Then, complete the following information to help you write a blog to new Seneca Students that meets the core concepts of communication
INFORMATION GATHERING: (A TYPE OF BRAINSTORMING)
Audience: What information do you know about Seneca students? Remember, not all come directly from a Canadian or Ontario high school. Take some time between classes to ask at least five students the following questions and note your answers in a separate piece of paper or notebook. OR adjust this document to help you.
1. What was their education experience before coming to Seneca? Did they come from work, directly from high school or from another country?
2. What were some of the emotional challenges they encountered in their first semester or first year?
3. What do they know now, or wish they had known, that they did not know before?
From the information you collected above, which two to three are the most important that you think a new Seneca student should know? Which ones do you think should be emphasized more in your blog than the other. You can quote the students you interviewed if there was any meaningful information that they said?
Language: Considering what you have learned about the demographics (the make-up) of new Seneca students, what words would help connect with your audience? What concrete or specific words would be useful in your blog to new Seneca students so that (hopefully) all of them can understand your purpose and your overall message
Tone: How do you wish to sound (tone) the new students? What words or phrasings to you think will help you convey your intended tone?
Purpose: While you have a purpose for the blog (as identified in the assignment), what is the subject that you will be discussing and what point or main message do you wish for them to take from the blog about being a new student at Seneca? What types of examples or facts do you need to include to help you convey this main point?
ORGANIZATION OF IDEAS:
Pre-Writing Strategies:
Additional information:
· How do you think you should open your blog? What will help you connect with the new student who is reading the blog?
· How do you think you should close your blog? What do you wish them to “take away”? (Write your blog first before considering your closing).
Now that you have some (hopefully pretty) good information for your assignment, now you need to consider the organization of ideas and create a working outline. Consider the following questions:
1. How are you going to organize your ideas about being a new student at Seneca
2. Will chronological order be helpful? Yes? No? Why?
3. Is Climatic or least important to most important helpful? Yes? No? How?
Helpful hint: write out the ideas you are going to write about on individual sticky notes and play around with the order. These ideas will form the “body” of your blog.
