• Students are required to research and prepare a 2500-word essay which explores the mental health response(s) experienced by a chosen group (e.g. survivors, first responders, children, those who witnessed the event, family members, etc.) in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, NZ.
• More specifically, students are required to address:
(i) how the trauma symptomology most often/commonly presented in the chosen group;
(ii) how trauma in the chosen group was subsequently treated;
(iii) treatment modalities that were deemed helpful to those who needed further assistance to process the effects of their trauma exposure;
(iv) interventions that were perceived to be unhelpful or even damaging;
(v) what was learnt by mental health professionals about treatment interventions post a major disaster; and what was learnt about vicarious traumatisation in the mental health professionals and first responders.
1.1 Assessment Criteria

• A clear, coherent and well-researched essay which:
(i) includes all relevant sections of an essay;
(ii) complies with the Counselling Course Information Booklet relevant to the preparation and presentation of an academic essay (provided in ExO);
(iii) is compliant with the Beginner’s guide to the APA 6th ed. referencing style manual (provided in ExO), including full in-text citation and inclusion of a reference list;
