Highlights
Assessment Task:
Produce a management report on one of the following scenarios that should not normally be longer than about 2000 words, excluding appendices. It is important that it is appropriately referenced. It should be written as a report to the management team giving well-researched recommendation and/or action plan.
An organisation that you have or are currently employed by, could be used as a basis for these scenarios, instead of those described, subject to prior discussion and agreement with the Unit Leader.
Scenario 1:
Your organisation is considering either inshore or offshore outsourcing for the development and future maintenance of a new business-critical IT system. In addition, it is considering a Human Resource system and also a non-business critical administrative system. Assume that the organisation has had no prior experience with offshore outsourcing and has previously used its own in-house developers and support staff. However, it does have experience of onshore outsourcing of its payroll and building maintenance.
As a senior IT manager for the organisation, you have been asked to prepare a report for management, indicating, briefly, the benefits and disadvantages of outsourcing models for these specific types of projects, including any relevant legal and environmental issues relevant to the organisation, to the UK and to any proposed offshoring countries. Indicate the changes that will become necessary to the organisation’s legal and quality processes.
Provide, within your argument, for each of the three types of project, the requirements that would affect the choice of country for offshore outsourcing. Include the option of using more than one country and, again for each type of project, the inshore outsourcing model.
Recommend, with justification, your preferred current single country that could be considered to undertake all three projects, and recommend, in your opinion, the appropriate separate country for each of the three projects.
Furthermore, recommend, with justification, your preferred current inshore outsourcing model that could be considered to undertake all three projects, and in your opinion, the appropriate model for each of the three projects.
State any assumptions you make about the organisation. Illustrate your arguments with recent examples.
Scenario 2:
Your organization, in the field of scientific chemicals production and distribution currently situated close to a residential area, in the outskirts of Southampton, is considering implementing ISO 9000, TickITplus or CMMI for its in-house computing development department. Although most of the IT system developed is for administrative purposes, there is also a section responsible for developing and maintaining the safety-critical software for the control of the chemical plant. The organisation produces chemicals and already has ISO 9000 certification for its chemical production plant.
You are concerned about the effect of the 2005 Buncefield chemical plant accident in Hertfordshire, the West Fertilizer Company explosion north of Waco, Texas in 2013 and recently the Arkema plant incident in Crosby Texas in August 2017 on the concerns of the local population as well as the legal issues that resulted from these accidents.
You, as IT manager, have been asked to prepare a report for management, discussing the three options and briefly state your opinion, with justification, which one or combination of options the organisation should consider.
State any assumptions you make about the organisation. Illustrate your arguments with recent examples.
Scenario 3:
You have just moved to a company, as the newly appointed Quality Manager. You have become concerned that sections of the company are apparently not aware of, or adhering to the latest computer-related legislation. The company has just expanded from a small retail chain in the South of England, to selling on the Internet. There is a growth in the use of e-mail, both internally and externally, with suppliers and customers. Although the majority of your customers are from the UK, a number of both customers and suppliers are based in the USA. There are currently rumours about the company being taken over by a major American organization.
Prepare a report for Management, indicating in order of importance (in your opinion, with justification), the relevant legislation together with a clearly defined business case for acting on your proposals. Produce an action plan, with justification, that the company should undertake immediately. Include recent and proposed legislation and related guidance on Green IT issues.
State any assumptions you make about the company. Illustrate your arguments with recent examples.
Scenario 4:
You have just moved to a company as the newly appointed Network Manager. Initial discussions with senior staff lead you to being suspicious that there might be potential problems with the security of both data and services. You have become concerned that sections of the company are apparently not aware of, or adhering to, best practice in secure systems and that it is only by providence that severe issues have not been encountered.
These systems are required in day-to-day operations both within the company and with its dealings with customers and suppliers as well as financial management and human resources. The company has recently invested in equipment that allows remote access. It is also considering VOIP technologies.
Prepare a report for Management, indicating a relevant framework for both audit and process improvement. This should include a justified discussion, with reference to recent issues in network security, of the business need to act on your proposals. This should be accompanied by a clear action plan.
State any assumptions you make about the company. Illustrate your arguments with recent examples.
Scenario 5:
Your organisation specialises in the development of digital design solutions and is based on the outskirts of Southampton. As the newly appointed Digital Design Manager, you have been conducting discussions with senior staff at your organisation and as a result have become concerned that sections of the company are apparently not aware of, or adhering to copyright legislation or standards of professional practice. There is particular concern around the use of digital artefacts.
The organisation is currently undergoing rapid expansion from a regional to a national provider of digital design solutions. As a result, the organisation workforce now also consists of a number of remote working staff.
You, as Digital Design Manager, have been asked to prepare a report for upper management, indicating in order of importance the relevant copyright legislation, codes of practice and social responsibility (in your opinion, with justification), with a clearly defined business case for acting on your proposals. Produce an action plan, with justification, that the company should undertake immediately. Include recent and proposed legislation and related guidance on professional practice.
State any assumptions you make about the company. Illustrate your arguments with recent examples.
