Overview

In this assessment your task is to create a business case for commercial deployment of the work developed in your Masters dissertation. You are to assume that the work is to be taken further, requiring appropriate investment by an organisation, to develop a market-ready product/service to be deployed and add value to an existing business, as e.g. a product or service or management tool, or in some other capacity.

Typically your innovation will be something that will have a phased deployment, growing over a few years until it reaches a significant market and breaks even/is profitable. Typically it will not be profitable at the beginning, and will require continued investment to reach the break even/profitable point. For this reason, in the report sections below, you are asked to consider a timeframe of 5 to 10 years (or whatever is appropriate for your development/deployment).

Your business case will comprise a single report of about 15 pages at 11 point font in which you will demonstrate knowledge of how to align business value with research and development activities. For this report you will use the “Five Case Model”. The Five Case Model normally develops the business case iteratively, in 3 distinct stages

Stage 1 – Strategic Outline Case (SOC)

Stage 2 - Outline Business Case (OBC)

Stage 3 - Full Business Case (FBC)

Your report will provide an Outline Business Case at Stage 2.
