Project Summary
Obesity is the common global issue in world today. Australia is ranked in third position among developed countries in obesity problem. Dementia is another global issue increasing worldwide and expected to increase by 400% in next 20 years. There are some studies showing the association between obesity in midlife to the dementia at old age while some say there is no any associations which make this issue controversial. So, in this study, we aimed to examine the relation between the obesity in midlife and dementia at old age studying the population of the obese people admitting in governmental hospitals in Kathmandu, Nepal. The proposed study is planned to be carried out in government hospitals of Kathmandu valley taking all the individuals between the age range of 40-45 years admitting during the January 2018 as a study population. The data is to be taken at the regular interval of five years for 20 years. The collected data is to be analysed by calculating the relative risk. The proposed study is the prospective cohort study with the purposive non-probability sampling technique. The main impact of this study is expected to control dementia in old age by controlling the obesity in the midlife of the people and help governments to form policy to control the obesity problem globally.
Background
Obesity is the common global health issue in world today. According to WHO report on the status of the obese population in 2000, there was increase in the world obese population by 100 million during the short duration of just five years from 1995 to 2000. According to Healey (2015), 83% of the males and 75% of the females above 20 years of age are likely to be obese by the year 2025 if the current trend in increase in obesity will continue. Among the developed countries, Australia is ranked in the third position in obesity problem. The figures above are quiet disturbing for the health epidemiologists and health policy makers which has made obesity now a global issue with active participation of the health specialists and experts all over the world for developing and planning of the appropriate health policies and regulations that can help to reduce the obese population. According to Healey (2015), eating more calorie, inactivity, modern living, socioeconomic factors, change in 7 food supply, genes and birth factors are the major causes of obesity. Over the last three decades, the scenario of obesity has changed dramatically and for the first time in human recorded history the problem of obesity has gone far ahead than the problem of malnutrition (Rosin, 2008).
