Improving emergency department care for adults presenting with mental illness: a systematic review of strategies and their impact on outcomes, experience, and performance

Background: Care delivery for the increasing number of people presenting at hospital emergency departments (EDs) with mental illness is a challenging issue. This review aimed to synthesise the research evidence associated with strategies used to improve ED care delivery outcomes, experience, and performance for adults presenting with mental illness.

Method: We systematically reviewed the evidence regarding the effects of ED-based interventions for mental illness on patient outcomes, patient experience, and system performance, using a comprehensive search strategy designed to identify published empirical studies. Systematic searches in Scopus, Ovid Embase, CINAHL, and Medline were conducted in September 2023 .

Use the library's academic databases (e.g. CINAHL, PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus) to find three

(1) separate articles that provide evidence-based recommendations for practice. For each

article choose one (1) recommendation. Ensure that each article is current, reliable and fit for purpose.

Note that you will use each individual article to form a separate section of your written analysis.

Step 1- The Delayed Transfer of from the Emergency Department on Patients with Mental Health Issues

This paper discusses and analyses the delayed transfer from the Emergency Department on patients with mental health issues. The causes of delayed transfer from the emergency department are varying and can be due to staffing and bed shortage, hospital over-crowding which results in extended wait times, and lack of mental health facilities that are readily available and accessible in the community. This is particularly conceming for patients who are experiencing an acute mental health crisis, and require urgent medical treatment.

The consequence of delayed health care not only effects the mentally ill patient, but also impacts the healthcare system, as it can result in prolonging the care of the patient and increase in the amount of resources required to do so. In addition, it limits the ability of emergency department staff to attend to other medical emergencies, and places additional strain on the hospital staff which can result in inadequate treatment of patients and bumout. The surrounding community can also be affected as prolonged treatment can lead to further disruptions in the community such as putting the public at increased risk exposure to violence, homelessness of mentally unstable patients, and often requires the attention of emergency services who deal with crisis intervention which in turn puts further stress on community resources which will all be addressed throughout the article.
