COMP4009: Foundations of Computer Systems
Introduction:
•Design of a logic circuit assessing the learning outcomes
•Understand modern computer architecture
•Apply architecture concepts to software design
•Understand modern programming language design decisions in the context of the computer architecture
•Discussion of operating systems assessing the learning outcomes
•Gain insight into computer development
•Understand the functional role of computers within society
•Understand modern programming language design decisions in the context of the computer architecture
•Weekly exercises assessing the learning outcomes above and also
•Design logical computer components
Part 1: Design of a Logic Circuit
The diagram above shows the layout of a seven-segment display. Each segment in the display can be illuminated by applying the logic value of 1 to that segment. In this way, the display can show each of the numerals 0 – 7.
The segments are illuminated by setting X2/X1/X0 to the corresponding 3-bit binary number as shown above. Design the seven logic circuits (one for each segment) such that when the three signals that represent a numeral are applied to each circuit, the appropriate numeral is displayed.
To help you, the truth table for output Y0 is as follows:
Part 2: Discussion of Operating Systems
Select one of the following areas of Operating Systems (OS) functionality:
•Processor management, multitasking, and scheduling
•File systems (focusing on implementation rather than the user interface)
Write an essay comparing the functionality of Windows 10 and Mac OS Mojave in the area you have chosen. It should include:
•How each OS solves the problems related to these fields
•How these solutions are implemented in the OS at the low level (e.g. not just “you can run several programs at once” but what the quantum length and scheduling strategies are
•What are the advantages and disadvantages of the solutions and why each OS has been implemented in the way it has?
Part 3: Weekly exercises
See the website for details of this. You will be given formative feedback (ie any marks given are not final) each week if you submit by the deadline indicated on Moodle for that week. For the online quizzes, the formative feedback will be the scores from Moodle. For work uploaded, the formative feedback will be written by your practical tutor. You will then be given the opportunity to submit at the end of the semester any improvements you wish to make to each of your submissions. For each submission, if you do not submit an improvement, your original mark will be used.
