I. Assessment Requirements 

You are required to provide a Literature Survey of a topic of your choice. This will be a summary of a topic chosen by you which should give you background information that can be used in your Major Project. It is important that it is expressed in your own words, and properly referenced throughout. 

This Literature Survey forms the basis of the Project Plan that will be submitted in Assignment 2 of this module. It is therefore important that you meet with your project supervisor throughout the term to develop your Literature Survey even after submission of this assignment. It is expected in Assignment 2 that the Literature Survey has been further developed from that submitted for Assignment 1 following feedback from your project supervisors. 

Page Limit

The Literature Survey should be around 8 sides long and must not exceed 10 sides. Marks will be deducted where students exceed 10 sides or do not follow the guidelines for font size and line spacing given below. A list of references will not be included in the page limit. 

Submission requirements

Your work should be submitted to the respective Dropbox folder in the Research Methods Room on NOW in PDF or MS Word formats. You should use your name and student ID as the file name, e.g. Joe_Bloggs_N123456.pdf. Your work should be appropriately word processed. Text must be 12 point Arial, flush left, and single spaced. Include your name and student registration number in a header. You must include references in Harvard style as described on the library web site. Do not include a title page, abstract or table of contents. 

You must include a signed statement, “In submitting this work I confirm that I am aware of, and am abiding by, the University’s expectations for proof-reading”. 

II. Assessment Scenario/Problem 

A Literature Survey is an analysis of research relevant to your topic of investigation. It explains and justifies how your investigation may help answer some of the questions or gaps in your area of research. The purpose of a Literature Survey is to demonstrate that you are able to understand and critically analyse the background research in your topic area. It also shows that you are able to select and source the information that is necessary to develop a context for your research. This is a key part of your final MSc project and it will develop over time as you explore your topic further. 

A Literature Survey evaluates and synthesises existing literature related to the topic under investigation. It should therefore be wide enough to cover the main aspects of the area under investigation but narrow enough to eliminate irrelevant information. It should also be characterised by critical analysis as opposed to summarizing, quoting and paraphrasing. In this way, it addresses the research questions and/or theoretical framework of the investigation. 

The characteristics of a good Literature Survey are as follows: 

• Extensive: Is it broad and comprehensive? 

• Current: Is the literature used up to date (apart from 'classic' older papers in your field)? 

• Relevance: Is it well focused on the topic and research problem under investigation? Has the work been peer-reviewed? 

• Thoroughness: Is it an in-depth study of the major contributions to the topic area? 

• Critical: Is it a critical evaluation of approaches to the research area and points out methodological flaws or gaps in research, inconsistencies in theory and findings, or issues and areas that require further study? 

• Well written: Is it well written with the correct use of grammar and punctuation that makes the review easy to read by a non-expert in the research area?

IV. Feedback Opportunities 

Formative (Whilst you’re working on the coursework)

You are expected to arrange meetings with your supervisor to discuss your progress in the literature survey amounting to a total time of around 1-2 hours. These meetings will enable the supervisor to give you advice and feedback on your progress. 

Summative (After you’ve submitted the coursework)

You will receive electronic feedback on the Dropbox folder regarding your coursework submission from your supervisor.
