RESEARCH PAPER: You must write a research paper on a topic to be agreed with the lecturer. Papers must be analytical, not a mere factual description of your topic. This assignment contributes 30% of the overall mark for COMP821. 

RESEARCH PAPER GUIDELINES 

I. General Instructions 

Select a topic of your choice (we recommend a topic derived from the modules/themes in the paper. Given the nature of the research paper assignment, this “sub-topic” tends to be narrower in scope) and submit it for approval to the lecturer. Please submit your idea (to your lecturer, via email) by 20/03/2020, or earlier. 

This assignment is a research paper, not an essay, and as such, you are expected to research your topic carefully, and write formally. Your paper must be typed, double spaced, on standard A4 paper. A softcopy of the paper will be checked using the turnitin.com service. The body of the text (excluding title page, end notes [if any], and the references section) must have a word count of around 3,000 words. Follow APA V.6 as a referencing style and in presenting your paper. 

Research papers are due as part of the Portfolio, by the end of the day on 5th June 2020 (soft copy submission: Turnitin , through Blackboard). 

As per the AUT recommendation, late assignments, without an approved extension, are be subject to a deduction of 5% (one grade, e.g., from C+ to C) of the total marks available for each 24-hour period, or part thereof, up to a maximum of five days. Assignments over five days late (without an approved extension) will not normally be accepted or marked and students will receive a DNC (Did Not Complete) for that assessment. 

II. Research Procedures 

The research paper, if properly planned and executed, will add to the value of the course by increasing the depth of your knowledge in one or more subject areas and by familiarising you with the use of the resources of the AUT library. When researching your topic, you are expected to go beyond course readings and lectures; simply rehashing material presented in class will not be satisfactory. 

III. Marking Criteria 

Papers will be graded based on the criteria below. See also Appendix, page 2. 

(1) The description of the issue(s) (statement of purpose, factual accuracy, whether your description is up to date); 

(2) Your analysis of the issue(s); 

(3) The quality of your research (whether you find good sources, whether your sources are current and diverse); and 

(4) Writing mechanics (correct spelling and grammar, clarity and style, citation form, and organisation). 

IV Academic Integrity 

This course regards most seriously any acts of dishonesty relating to assessment. Any such acts will result in appropriate adjustment of the assessment mark and may lead to disciplinary action. In this course cheating includes:

• Examination misconduct
