After years of uncertainty, a consensus that climate change is real, and caused by the human- run fossil fuel industry, is rapidly becoming commonplace, especially to climate scientists (Cook 2016). Finding solutions to the problem of climate change matters because of the effect extreme greenhouse gases such as CO2 have on our world, which is causing species extinction and pose a threat to food security around the world (Paarlberg 2015 p.4). Although replacing the fossil fuel industry with renewable energy is being touted as the appropriate solution to minimising the human impact of climate change (Woodrow & Cooke 2014), this paper will weigh arguments for and against government intervention, using climate change as a springboard to show that in decision making by the global powers that be value power and profit over ethics and justice for all. As a nation using 20 percent of the world’s energy each year (Woodrow & Cooke 2014), the United States will be used as a case study referencing the recent litigation against ExxonMobil, the oil company deceiving the world about the link between fossil fuels and climate change since the 1970s (Supran & Oreskes 2017). The paper will also delve into the changing relationship between business and government. Governments have been losing power highlighted by Hirst’s (1997) argument that because of the newly globalised nature of economic activity, ‘governments will become like glorified local authorities (because) political agendas are now set by the transnational corporations and the main international financial markets.’ Furthermore, neo-liberal agenda is undermining government (and society) through the push to deregulate markets, shrink governments allowing markets to govern and turn humans into ‘profit and loss calculators’ (Metcalf 2017). In particular, neo-liberalism has challenged government power through the Trans Pacific Partnership, which theoretically paved the way for businesses to sue governments in international tribunals if the law was changed that could be seen as harming investment (Sundaram 2016).
