CONTEXT: Students have analysed a number of shorter prescribed texts from the HSC prescriptions for ‘Module C – The Craft of Writing’ as models and stimulus for the development of their own ideas and written expression. They have examined how writers of complex texts use language imaginatively, persuasively and informatively for a range of purposes.

TASK DESCRIPTION: The assessment task has two parts.

Part One: Creative Writing 20% Students are to compose two pieces of original writing, each reflecting on ideas and/or concerns of a different prescribed text studied during ‘The Craft of Writing’. Students may choose to write in imaginative, persuasive or discursive styles. The total word limit for these two pieces is 1600 words. In addition, students must submit one edited draft of one of their pieces as evidence of the drafting process. This draft will not be marked, but the marker may refer to them as a way of better understanding your final creative piece. Part Two: Reflection 5% Students are to construct a critical reflection on the process of writing ONE of their original pieces. The reflection should consider the effectiveness of their writing choices as well as the influence of studying the writing of others (the 3 short prescribed texts). This reflection must not exceed 400 words in length.

Original Writing You will be assessed on how well you:

• express ideas, insights or concerns of two prescribed texts across both pieces of writing

• craft your two texts and use a wide range of language forms and features to communicate meaning

• control language and demonstrate awareness of the conventions of the chosen forms of both pieces of writing

MARKING CRITERIA – Reflection You will be assessed on how well you:

• demonstrate reflection on the critical and creative process, including confidence and writing skills, and how this has developed your awareness of the craft of writing.
