The Design Problem
First and foremost, each franchise store produces an estimated 90,000kg of wasted food annually, costing these businesses in excess of $1.3 million dollars per year [1]. 32% of waste produced from fast food industries is organic waste; implying there is an inefficient method of disposal [2]. Food waste produces unnecessary environmental damage throughout its entire cycle, for example, when it reaches landfill, it will occupy land, produces greenhouse gases, pollutes waterways and cause soil degradation. In an urban setting, food waste from fast food franchises stunt the growth of market value, aesthetics and the desire to live in an area of South East Queensland. Furthermore, the current disposal method of discarded foods is ineffective at such a large cost. This is evident through rubbish not making it to landfills and other desired trash disposals; therefore, creating litter amongst the streets, local wilderness parks and nature reserves located within South East Queensland’s urban communities. Therefore, fast food consumers and corporations are targeted due to influential status and potential for improvements.
Target Market
The desired target market are the fast food corporations and consumers of their products. The fast food franchises are at the heart of the problem due to their inability to change and continue to stick by current disposal methods. However, corporations can implement change if needed or influenced to do so; this is done through enticement of increases in reputation and the potential expansion of their consumer market. The fast food industry is important for a manner of reasons; for example, those franchises are the ones producing the food, corporations such as Hungry Jacks are also known as influencers; implying they are able to change the way the consumers dispose of any unused foods. The consumer market is harder to influence due to their individual thinking; however, they are essential due to the people who purchase from these fast food franchises are consuming their products. Consumers initially created the problem through overestimating purchases of food products, incorrect disposal for already existing methods and littering throughout urban communities. Furthermore, fast food buyers are an essential target market due to the effectivity and efficiency they bring through spreading the new method, actively participating in improving liveability and ensuring fast food outlets are influenced to use newer and more efficient disposal techniques. Not all consumers will have the mindset to be as active in participating with more effective food waste disposal; therefore, fast food franchisers are able to restrict what disposal methods area available instore. Thus, ensuring consumers within the fast food outlets will use the newer disposal methods.
Why is this different.
Whilst the overarching problem presented has been the excessive amount of food waste produced by the fast food industry, it would be quite difficult for the industry itself to mitigate such a problem as it actually stems from consumers over-ordering or sudden changes in their dining circumstances which both lead to whole foods being discarded. This leads to the idea that the best way to tackle this would be to change the consumers mindsets around how much they order. However, this would decrease revenue streams for the franchise as each customer would be spending less money, and this is a difficult thing to do purely over the idea of being more sustainable as studies have shown [3]. Another way to look at the problem is changing the idea of waste, something that is wasted is something that has no use, but that isn’t necessarily true for uneaten food.
