Assignment Task

Brief

You are required to write an academic report of a maximum of words based on knowledge of digital forensic procedure and practical experience of digital forensic tools.

This coursework will be marked out of 100 and will contribute to 50% of the total marks available for the module.

Descriptive details of Assignment

Mr. X is suspected of murdering his wife. Assume that you are appointed as a member of the digital forensic team. You need to discuss the procedure that you would follow to investigate the crime. You should focus on how you would collect the digital evidence in the crime scene (hint: look carefully at the provided pictures to identify the various kinds of digital devices and think of the best practice to follow for each of them). You are also provided a digital forensic image for analysis. From the data image, you would try to identify all possible pieces of evidence that can help the court to decide the case.

You are provided some pictures of a crime scene and the digital evidence (which are available in the Assignment Supplement folder in Blackboard)

The Assignment Supplement folder in Blackboard will contain a) pictures of crime scenes b) a digital forensic image for analysis.

Your report should cover the following points: use reference to backup your analysis 

When comparing use the same disk.

1. Tool Evaluation: You need to critically analyse TWO different digital forensic tools and identify the appropriateness of the tools for data acquisition and data analysis ( FTK imager & autopsy ) one can be acquisitions and the other can be better in analysis. You need to provide evidence of your experiment of the tools. For your experiment of a tool for data acquisition you need to provide all possible details of the digital device used for data acquisition, the procedure used for data acquisition, and the screen shots of the experiment result as evidence . Data used for analysis should be provided (google drive for example)

For doing experiments on data analysis capacity of the tools, you can use any data set, you can use the data set provided for the assignment as well. You need to provide the link of the data set if you are using a publicly available dataset. If you are using your own data set, you can upload that online using any cloud service (google drive, Box etc) and provide the link in the report. Make sure the data set is accessible by us for checking.  

This portion of the report is independent of the case you would investigate. However, this analysis would help you to determine the appropriateness of the tools for the investigation of the case.

2. Digital forensic procedure: Discuss the digital forensic procedure that you would follow for the investigation of the case.

What are evidences in picture? How to evaluate the crime scene, how you would transfer the crime scene?

What digital evidence can you identify from the provided pictures that can be related to the case? What kind of procedures do you need to follow for data acquisitions? You need to discuss if you would consider live acquisition on some devices. Which tool will you use for that? How would you protect and transport each of the pieces of evidence you can find in the crime scene picture? The discussion should reflect your understanding of your digital forensic procedure.

3. Data analysis and reporting: You need to provide the findings of your data analysis. The findings of evidence from the data image should indicate the facts of the case. It should include what evidence you have found (if any) and how it is relevant for the case. It should be precise and appropriate for the case. This section will include the sub-sections: a. The purpose of investigation b. Methodology(analysis method) c. The Findings (the facts identified and your opinion on the technical matter of how confident you are on the fact identified)  d. Conclusion (it should include any limitations ) old facts ex.

You should also generate an automated report of your investigation using a Digital forensic tool. The tool-generated report is excluded from the word count. This tool-generated report should be submitted separately from the assignment report that you would write. From the tool itself. The relevant report to the case. Only use 1 tool, the good tool for analysis.
